Right now, Irma could go anywhere. What we (us in the Gulf States) are watching for is entry into that 16N x 62W zone that past trends will View Quote |

@pcsutton
Thank you for your updates. Been lurking S2K.org since Harvey began and coupled with folks like you, there's a wealth of knowledge on these things that I could never comprehend. |

Historical paths for storms within two degrees of Irma...1851 to 2016 It would be interesting to know if the ones that made it to the USA also had a high pressure system as shown by cm above. https://icons.wunderground.com/data/images/at201711_climo.gif View Quote there is usually a high in the atlantic, named the bermuda high. what it does, is block hurricanes from moving north of it - think of highs as forming barriers to the movement of hurricanes. depending on how far west the western edge, hurricanes form off the coast of africa, move accross the atlantic, and start bumping along the bermuda high. if the high isn't very strong, the western edge is in the atlantic, and hurricanes tend to do east coast hits, or hook around the high and miss everthing. if the high is further west, it will tend to enter the gulf, and what it does after that depend on steering winds, weather fronts, etc. here is a nasa post on the bermuda high - the video seems to not play, but the picture is correct https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/10069 since the western extent of the bermuda high changes, it's still kind of far out to tell were the boundary of it is. there is something else that might be of interest, and are called hebert boxes. there is increased likelyhood of a florida hit, if a strong hurricane passes through these areas https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebert_Box |

Why can't we just drop a nuke in the middle of it and blow the storm apart?
One nuke is a hell of a lot cheaper than rebuilding Houston. |

My son (8) told me Godzilla can fight a hurricane and win, so why not a nuke?

11pm EST update.
It is predicted to turn into a monster by Sunday night. |

it's going to be 5 days before it's known for certain, but right now, it looks like the high in the atlantic, is going to weaken and allow the system to curve northward. watch what happens after it passes 60w.
the 2 possiblities that occur are a carolina hit, or it's going to cur around and go back east. can't really tell untill we get closer |

U booked a Mid-September cruise to the Carribean ? https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/89990/th__9_-294301.JPG View Quote The last 2 years we have ended up diverted away from Bermuda because of storms but we were not super worried about it, focused on having fun. Ugh, just bought a house, stay away from the northeast please. :)

Meh, we do cruises out of New England to the Carribean in the fall, usually October. You get a much better price. This doesn't bode well for the domestic gasoline situation...or anything else for that matter.
Where's Godzilla when we need him? |

The news blurb I just saw predicted it stayed south and went right in the Gulf

Current GFS shows it up the east coast. Euro model shows into the Gulf.

Hopefully it steers away from Louisiana... Last thing we need is the whole damn gulf to be shutdown.

In to see where she goes, hopefully out of the Gulf so that our brothers down there can dry out a bit.
