Jesus... My GF and I walked 11 miles in one afternoon walking around at a comfortable pace exploring Paris last summer.

He had to have been walking in circles. I read story of someone that got lost in a remote but not unpopulated area of Alabama for like a week. Walking in circles. Less than 20 miles in any direction would have put them on a highway. Shit happens when you get lost.

Even if he was wading through thigh deep snow, uphill, barefoot, and doing only one mile every two hours.... and lets say he rested 30 minutes per mile.... that's only 35 hours of travel time.

What did he do with the other 61 hours?

One of the biggest pain in the asses I deal with in my job is when we have to use outside trucking.  This is big trucking I am talking about, hauling permitted loads.  Normally we use our own fleet but often times we are just too busy so we out source it .... and the average experience I have with these drivers is that they are dumber than dirt. I hate to belittle any man (or woman) that goes out and makes an honest living but god damned if big haulers aren't some of the dumber people I have to deal with.

And I have noticed a steady increase in the number of forefingers that are semi drivers from year to year, specially with the big name carriers.

Still managed to walk that much.

Me too.  High five.  Gotta say it was one of the roughest hikes I've done.  Not only for the distance, but the altitude gain/loss is 6000 ft. ea. way.  It was pretty gnarly for a day hike.

I think the real story went something like this:

"Baby, this has been fun - I'd stay here forever if I could . ."

"But aren't you going to get in trouble for not showing up to work?  What if your wife is looking for you?"

"No problem - My wife knows I'm gone for day or two when I'm driving. And I've shown up a day late on a route and the boss didn't blink."

"But you got here four days ago!"

"Oh shit."

My fat ass could do 14 miles in a day, with time to kill on the way.  Unless that shit was uphill both directions and in snow covered, oiled, sand.

Not completely: last Summer, my wife and I and our boys, did 18 miles with packs, in the Cascades, in less than a day (with a pleasant Lunch stop at the lake).  And, it's pretty common for my wife and boys to routinely do 12 mile hikes between me leaving for work and returning home.

Of course, we're not shuffling lardass gothapotamuses - so there's that.

I'd suspect he's hospitalized because his admission data included things like:

-Glucose level on the fingerstick monitor blinking "ERROR"
-BP "Pat Pending"/132
-Blood gravy level above therapeutic range
-Acute "gotta save my job and CDL with a hospital stay"-itis.*

*That diagnosis may include a bit of "by the time I pee in a cup with a chain of custody, I think I'll be clear or able to claim drugs given in the hospital."

On different jobs I've had over the years to include the military, I've dealt with truckers.  Some of them are the neatest people you'll ever meet.  Most are just regular guys working to make ends meet.  Then the last kind you'll meet, the absloute fucking retard.  He can't follow simple directions, he's slow moving and mouth breathing.  Usually he has his equally retarded girlfriend or wife with him.  Together they share half a brain.  Simple things like, "I need to see your Bill of Lading and inspect your cargo."  Meets with, "Uh yah, um what?"

My wife helps run a trucking company and shes often frustrated with their drivers and I have to remind her, "If it weren't for trucking these people wouldn't have jobs.  I learned to keep things slow and easy for them to follow.

It scares me that most everything is moved by these people and I have to share the road with them.  But they are working and contributing to society.

As for the trucker in the article, his story isn't adding up or he is an absolute moron with no life skills because he needlessly put himself at risk.  Either way, I don't see him holding a wheel much longer.

We had a 3 day music festival in the area a couple years ago.  It was a dirt road to get to the venue.  Well it rained and the shuttle buses got stuck.  People whined and cried on TV about sleeping in the ditch and woods because they couldn't get on the shuttle bus back to their cars.

It was a 1.5 mile walk.

This country is doomed.

14 miles of dirt road is easier to hike that 14 miles of uncleared woods.  At 2 mph, that should take 8 hours.  On paved surface including an uphill climb, I've covered 4 miles in 1 hour 10 min.  A longer leg person can do it faster (took me years to figure that out).
