I remember first hearing about these when I was about 12yrs old, circa 1997. Guys more educated on the fighter/tactical side of house how do these compare to our Viper and Bug? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1d/Air-to-air_with_a_Czech_Saab_Gripen_with_AFB_%C4%8C%C3%A1slav_in_the_background.jpg View Quote |

They come from the factory in a big flat cardboard box. They are assembled entirely from pieces of cleverly-interlocking particle board and the only fasteners are pins and pegs, no screws or bolts.

They're good aircraft, though they suffer somewhat from the same thing that makes them effective: They're small.
Now, that said... that doesn't mean they're not good, especially in this era of Precision Guided munitions that make carrying a lot less important than it used to be. They're Agile, good avionics, very western-compatible... it's a great aircraft for a Nation on a budget, and would be a good 'low' aircraft to pair with something else. I understand why some countries pick them over F-16's. I also understand why some countries... don't. |

The Gripen is basically the European equivalent of the F-20 Tigershark concept. It is designed to be small, cheap and inexpensive to operate, while still possessing some decent capabilities. It would make an excellent complimentary fighter to the Typhoon or Rafale as the low end of the high-low mix. That said, I wouldn't want is to be my nation's primary fighter aircraft. It is a bit limited when compared to the previously mentioned designs, as well as American designs like the F-15 and F-18 Super Hornet. The Gripen is a tiny little thing and you just can't pack a radar in that nose that is large enough to compete with those found on larger air superiority fighters. The small size also limits the amount of fuel and weapons it can carry, though it is certainly respectable in those regards for such a tiny aircraft.

S. African AF bought a bunch of these (for some serious kickbacks) to replace the Cheetah's and Mirages that were in service. Fucking Saab's are sitting in the hangars - not enough money for replacement canopies, parts for maintenance, fuel or ammo. If you are a 3rd world country, buy Mig. I saw the Gripens at an air show - I think the pilots were some of the last hold outs from the past - don't know if the SAAF has any pilots capable of flying them now....they handled well. That said, I don't know a damn thing about fighter planes.
Anyways, Gripens are cool...I like them. Not as much as the F35, Harrier or Mirage... |

There are still enough decent ground crew folks left in the service there that would have been able to keep something pre Mig29 in the air. I mean FFS, S. I haven’t really studied them since they aren’t a threat aircraft but a few guesses are:
-Roughly on par with early legacy Hornet and Vipers - Significantly less capable than high lot Supers or Vipers - Would get spanked by their primary threat aircraft (all Flanker variants) That’s all I got. |
