Bingo.  Also so you can feel the ground before you step, so you don’t fall in a deep hole or mud so bottomless you cannot get out.

Waders might be as important though.

Off or some other DEET type bug spray.
Gator's and snakes never bothered me as much as skeeters.

Deet, waders, stick and water to drink plus directional devices.  I think that’s about it?  Aside from your normal EDC loadout.

I heard that is a big danger with chest waders, which are what you want to be wearing because water is often stomach deep.

But if you get into deeper water, and flood the waders they supposedly make you drown.

Waders will drown you if you step into a hole. I'd only wear them if I knew the depth wouldn't exceed them like in a rice or crawfish pond. No way would I wear them out in the real swamp.

If it weren’t for the snakes and skeeters it would probably be better to wade through in old sneakers and swim trunks.

Honestly a good walking stick, preferably something with a paddle type flat area near the bottom or top as well as a hook that will help you "push" your way out of a muck hole or "pull" your way out by hooking it on a nearby branch.

I have no idea where you buy those but I saw a guy walking out towards a swamp with one once.  Seemed like quite a handy little tool if you ever found yourself in a situation like I was in last night.

edit:  Do NOT wear waders.  Just don't be a pussy, get a little wet, you'll live.  You won't necessarily drowned in waders if you get some you can pop the straps off of quick and slip out of but they make it a real pain in the ass to cover a lot of ground, they take away agility, and they aren't as safe as a good pair of boots and regular pants.

Waders are great for fishing and duck hunting but if you're really going to be pushing deep into a swamp leave them at home.  Just pack a towel and change of clothes if you are worried about getting cold.

All the swamps I have been in were full of snakes and skeeters unless it was winter and then it would be too cold for that.

Also, if it is at night, a really good light is at the top of the list.
