Though I'm going with Samurai just because of the tech advantage, I think I remember reading accounts of Portuguese sailors beating Samurai in duels (correct me if I'm wrong). They were skilled warriors but the legend has far surpassed the reality.

I go with Samurai in open fields every time. The armor is the key. I give the Indian small chance if they are hiding in the woods and are able ambush and get some good arrow shots using elevation and ambush.
