Why do millennials refer to horror movies as "scary" movies. My wife fist noticed this around 10 years ago from her students and I've seen it ever since. Is it because of those comedy movies "Scary Movie"?
OP, if you're looking for something that isn't too gory/violent/rapey you could try Pumpkinhead or Dolls. |

The Thing 28 Days Later Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original, much more disturbing than the remake) The Witch Psycho (original) The Shining The Fly (1986) Event Horizon Night of the Living Dead Halloween (OG version, made my wife feel anxious due to the pacing/stalking) Below are "horror-lite" but still good. Pandorum Poltergeist Hellraiser The Cell View Quote Yeah I started to post High Tension but I backed out of my post because of his daughter and some sexual type content. Excellent movie though and great ending. |

I'd say more: Horror movies should ALL be scary. But other movies (Sci-fi, thriller, drama... rom com...) CAN be scary... but aren't necessarily horror (though they can be). |

"Scary movies" are what millennials call horror movies nowadays. Basically any movie that isn't a clearly defined sub genre of horror(slasher, torture porn) they call a scary movie. They are causing people to get confused. Genre is a thing. And they are clearly defined. "Scary" is not a genre. It's just what millennials started calling horror movies. I suspect it's because of that "Scary Movie" comedy series. |

Just like today, some are scary and some aren't. I think the really creepy stuff began after WW1 with the German Expressionism movement. Weird stuff brought about by the fallout, and national effort to entertain, following the war. Just what a shell shocked and depressed population needs: horror movies. |

Doesn't rely on jump scares, but creates that creepy atmosphere. P.S. Get a red rubber ball for some experimental late night fun, if your daughter says the movie wasn't scary. P.P.S. Watched this on VHS in college in the dorms over a holiday break. The kind of adjoining rooms with the shared bathroom in the middle. The floor was deserted, as most of the students had gone home for the holidays, including their roommate and the occupants of the other room. Midway through watching this movie with all the lights off, I hear a sound from the bathroom (the door was closed) and ask, "Didn't you say the people in the other room went home for the holidays? I swear I just heard a noise from the bathroom". Got a "Stop messing with me!" response. Maybe 10-15 minutes later, we both hear a sound from the bathroom. Then we hear the knob being turned very slowly, and the door sloooowly opens. The bathroom is pitch black. WTF!? Then a head pops out, "Hey! Whatchall doin?". We're going, "WTF was with the whole slooooowly opening the bathroom door with the lights off?". "Oh, I ended up coming back early. Thought I heard y'all next door. Wanted to see what y'all were doin but was tryin not to interrupt anything". LOL. Certainly added a little extra moment of heightened creepiness while watching the movie. |
