Years ago I and a buddy were discussing the same thing.
I just didn't have the $575 to drop on a crate of 10 SKS. |

I want one to make a coffee table with.
Open it, level the top, etch "Break in case of Emergency" on glass top. I'd leave them in cosmo and see about fitting a couple spam cans of 7.62x54 in with them.

Good way to get on the BATFE radar Yup, my first thought. Do it if its worth the potential hassle or ATF visit. You might never hear anything, but some others haven't been so lucky. I would not do it. |

The FFL rats you out for a quantity buy, or eventually when the FFL is audited they will notice 20 guns signed out to the same guy on the same day. They take notice of that stuff during audits. |

They wouldn't know unless audited, you are correct. Even then they wouldn't care about 10 mosins. |

If you don't mind that scrutiny then go for it. That would cause me to not buy them most likely. |

If you don't mind that scrutiny then go for it. That would cause me to not buy them most likely. EXACTAMUNDO! ATF has been known to check in on purchasers of quantities of rifles. That being said they aren't looking at people who buy twenty 91/30s. And even if they were, there is no law against owning 20 of the same gun. My anecdotal story of the day: I bought 20 AK receivers at once (in NY state of all places). The ATF didn't shoot my dog....actually they didn't even give me a phone call. |

If I had the disposable cash to do it, I sure would. Yep. I also love the coffee table idea. What a perfect freaking man cave table!! |

Back to the crate idea. Have any of you actually stuck your nose anywhere near one of those crates? I was going to buy an empty crate - $35 at my LGS. But the damn thing just reeked of cosmoline/oil/grease/mold/Soviet B.O. How do you get that smell out of it? Wouldn't it stick up the whole darn house?

I like the smell of cosmoline but yeah they stink. Maybe seal it with a satin poly? Something that won't change the look too much, but will keep the odor down. If its for a man cave then I wouldn't care what it smelled like. If it was for my living room then I might want to keep the smell down. |

Maybe your dealer hasn't been audited and they don't know about the purchase. Or once they did see it, it was so many years ago they didn't care. But like you said they have been known to check in on people. If you want that go for it, I don't want it. Not worth the possible scrutiny. |

How much could one pick up a Mosin for? Average price? Got a hex receiver 91/30 6 months ago in GREAT shape for $89 at BPW. They had smooth receivers in the same condition awhile back for $119. I would say somewhere between $100 and $130 now, due to panic buying, depending on condition. Expect M44 carbines to be more, and in worse shape. |

Towards the bottom of the page. http://www.classicfirearms.co/firearms.htm They don't give a price though. 89.99 ea, crate of 20. Listed as "unmolested". I would take that to mean $1799,80, + shipping. |
|
I was getting service ready molested ones for $30 each (without volume purchase) in 2005 when I had my C&R FFL. I'd rather have the cheaper ones that also tell a story of their use. Mosins are so common even mint condition with the lovely important stamps doesn't mean much.
