Its hard to tell based off the picture.
King or black rat snake would be my guess. Moccasins typically have real thick bodies with short tails. |

Need a better photo of the head, but I'd guess it is a water snake.

11MB photo got compressed to 1.7MB on upload.
I did not think it looked venomous until I started seeing the pointy head after looking at the photo some more. Wife thought it might be a water snake. |

Head shape looks poisonous...black snake has a more oval shaped head. This one, very triangular.

Based only on photo, I am also GUESSING Water Moccasin based on the head, the coloration (Moccasins come in a wide variety of color patterns) and the bulk of the body.
I am NOT a Snek Expert, so if somebody really knowledgeable could chime-in and edumacate me, I would appreciate it. |

Lots of folks are naming it a king snake.
Clearly it's not a king snake. THIS is a king snake; see the crown? Attached File |

It's a plain bellied water snake. Any one suggesting it's a water moccasin is wrong. Anyone suggesting it's a water moccasin due to "head shape" needs to learn to ID snakes based off more than old wive's tales.
Attached File ETA: you could post it on Texas Snake Identification on FB, but I'd probably be the one to provide the ID there, too. |

Quoted: Water snake, and there aren't "poisonous" snakes. Read up a bit more before doling out advice. You'll likely get beneficial snakes killed with those suggestions. View Quote Well, in fairness, if another human being is going to be wrong about the ID, I’d probably prefer they incorrectly ID a non-venomous rather than incorrectly ID’ing a venomous. Unknown snake in the yard with kids and dog running around? Sometimes in life it’s not just about the odds, it’s about the stakes. |

Water snakes that I have seen swimming in rock holes and rivers don't look like that. It looks like that head was made for patrolling more than it is for squiggling. |

I leave snakes alone, so far...
I've never encountered one with a triangular head in my little yard; if I did I'm not saying I'd kill it. |
|
We saw a snake with that coloration Saturday during a trail hike. It was longer with a slimmer head area. I though my son expected me to shoot it. No man, I dislike rodents as much as it likes them.

Not a moccasin. Water snake.
Head shape doesn't mean a damn thing. The biggest tell on a Moccasin is the bandit mask on his eyes, hooded eyes, charlie brown pattern(if you can see it) and they are usually short and fat mofos. |
