If you plan central or eastern Oregon, you'd better be ready for insanity.

Tens of thousands of people are heading for Big Summit Prairie. It will be hot and dry. There are essentially no services. There are lots of chokepoints on the roads. When some yahoo drives over dried vegetation and starts a grass fire, it could easily turn into a very bad situation.

The Madras Airport has RV sites at a little more reasonable price, but it will be a nightmare to get out of there when  the show ends that morning.

The crowds are so crazy that the Circle K gas station is renting out spots behind it for RV's for $500. This is a little square of broken asphalt next to the pumps.

I don't even think I am going to watch it. I don't feel like it's a very big deal. I remember seeing one before. Lots of people in CO are talking about driving up to WY to see it, but there's only 1 major road to/from the front range to the viewing path, it's going to be a parking lot.

There was an eclipse thread a month or more ago. I had seen a total eclipse in the early seventies when I was in the navy and wanted to take my wife to see this one. I thought we might take a road trip up to Craters of the Moon but a local said the influx up in that country was expected to be insane. After reading this thread I think I'll just stay home.

In a city directly in the path, probably working even though it's my day off. PD is sized for a population of 125,000, poor pay and treatment has reduced it by 20% so we could probably handle 90,000. There is supposed to be tourists in the city  jacking up the number to 600,000. Criminal activity will go through the flippin' roof.

Every local business I know is trying to rent any refer truck they can find, and expect to pay $10 a bag for ice if you can find any, the traffic will bring re-supply to a halt. If you have a medical condition please stay home, it's going to be like Black Friday at Wal-mart times 100 everywhere!

havent heard that about the NG but I beleive it, our area, all fire agencies are over staffing, its the dry season and already having grass fires, this weekend will really blow for them, roads will suck, I5 will be a nightmare, HW 22/26/20/34 along the path will be clogged, 101 along the coast will suck, (and if you are on 101 btwn Lincoln City and Waldport, be safe/careful, you dont want to need a medic)
