Oh, I see.

You want to compare yourself at 18 years old to a 43 year old soccer mom now.

The problem is.... "now" is when you're doing all the talking.

At least it's been agreed that the person whose mouth is writing the biggest checks has no ability to cash them.

At this moment? Maybe, after my recent health issues I'm very out of shape, only recently even had the ability to go back to the gym and then its been a very slow process where I can never overdue it. But in my prime, when I was just a Marine or Soldier who did unit PT every day, no fucking way were those soccer mom's stronger than me, not unless they were juiciing. People still dont' get the whole estrogen/testosterone thing. No women is going to be knocking out 20 dead hangs without either a decade of extremely tough training, or some pharma help. Show me soccer mom's knocking out 20+ good pullups and not disjusting jerk ups, I'd like to see this.

No, I was still doing that shit at 31, well enough to have no issues with my active duty infantry chain of command to complain at all. Meanwhile, 43 year old soccer moms aren't doing fuck all without weekly shots of test or HGH. But we all know its not them using, its always other people that are on PEDs.

I can't even follow why you're so invested on hating something you clearly don't even understand.  It is entirely a different workout. It has a different motion, and it works different parts of the body in a different way than a dead hang pullup does.

This is seriously, literally, by definition, a different workout. And it is exercising to get stronger.  Hence why people in Crossfit get stronger.

You do understand that crossfit uses kipping pullups and dead hang pullups differently in different workouts, right? Dead hang pullups are also a part of crossfit workouts.

You're not making yourself look like a badass by saying "well they're not doing real pullups like I did them back in mah grunt days!".  You're just making yourself look like an ass.

You're not getting stronger either if all you are doing is perfecting the technique for swinging your legs in a very specific manner while pumping your hips while swinging to use the momentum to push your chin over a bar while your high priest says "One, two, three." The point of an exercise is to get strong. A pull up is designed to increase the strength used to pull one self up to a bar. People cheat at it because they want to do more. I was in a branch of service that scored pullups as part of the PFT, which affected career progress and promotions, meaning money. For a while they allowed kipping. Motherfuckers kipped like crazy, got their 20, got their promotions, and it was doing fuck all to measure strength, let alone build it. So they changed it to dead hangs, a legitimate measure of strength. Want to get explosive force? Do dead hangs faster. Want to do it even more dynamically? Add weight, then do them faster, with strict form. Swinging isn't doing shit but cheating yourself while you lie to everyone else and try to say pullups are an ab workout, cardio workout, or any other bullshit.

Yes you will...

You're seriously claiming that repeating a specific workload to lift yourself won't make you stronger?  Dude, you don't know shit about what you're talking about.  That's the definition of what makes you stronger.  Where do you think the power for that motion comes from?

Edit: I'm not actually sure why I'm arguing with this stupid shit. You're literally just saying over and over that only one type of workout is legitimate, presumably because that's all you're good at. Crossfit is not only about strength. If it were, you might have some sort of point. Not a great one, since both pullups will build strength, but at least there would be some overlap of your argument and relevance.

A proper kip isn't even using your legs. The kip should come from your shoulders and mid-line. Legs/hips shouldn't be involved unless you are getting tired doing chest to bars, or muscle ups.

True. But repeating any motion consistently is going to build strength using the muscles that accomplish that motion.  Whether it's kipping, kipping wrong, or aggressively eating soup at dinner.  Claiming otherwise is window licking territory.

Very true. My comments were aimed at the leg swinging part of his comment. I shouldn't have quoted your response, and just highlighted the leg thing. Common misconception when people that don't know how to kip, see a kipping pull up.

Yes, xrays and MRIs of the shoulder too.  'Just a rotator cuff...' three years ago.  Did all the physical therapy and in fact I still do the stretches and strengthening regimen three days a week.

Do you have experience with HGH?  I've read some good reports of it (medical journals, not 'roid bros).

Seems like a strange study.  14 days on HGH and no positive results?  That doesn't seem abnormal at all, if they had studies of 3 months on HGH it would be more meaningful.  I found several interesting papers on that website siting good regenerative effects of connective tissue and nerves, I'm really interested in both.

Two conclusions:

Crossfit is weird and a sure way to rotator cuff surgery

and

I need to invest in HGH to jump start my come back.

Honest question, I've been looking into this to repair my shoulder that has hurt for nearly 3 years now.  Do you know much about it?

People anecdotally claim success, but http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23636184

I don't have any knowledge or experience, but between boxing and rugby I've destroyed my body. Then years of shift work meant I got way out of shape. I just want to have something to aid in faster recovery.

I would ask the question so that folks would answer in a mean and nasty way, or try to be edgy...then someone would get offended and the purses would come out swinging.
Then I would check back later to see how well everything brewed up.

You have no idea what you're talking about.  The greatest CFitter ever, Rich Froning, was like a mediocre baseball player IIRC.  And a fireman.  Yet he is a genetic monster at metabolic conditioning and has been dominant in competitive CF.  It's all about your engine.  Your engine must be trained and developed over a long period of time.  And not just with jogging.  Conditioning with a barbell or other strength movements is a completely different animal.  Most of these guys would not be top oly weight lifters.  Too short for strongman.  Too weak for powerlifting.  Nor professional sports because they're too short.  But they're just right for CF.

There are douchebags involved in every activity.  You choose to judge the activity by looking at them rather than the good examples.  The legit CF guys are legit lifters.  The guy who won last year and isn't even that big.  Yet you can see a video of him front squatting 340 something, off the ground, for reps.  Many of them snatch over 300#.  If you don't know how bad ass that is, then you are talking out of your lane.  The really impressive thing is the conditioning.  Go try some of what they do and you will understand.  It is way, way harder than it looks.  "CF" is way bigger than "CrossFit" the brand.  You do understand that there are way more competitions outside of the "CF Games" that have nothing to do with the brand?

Those top end competitors would have excelled at any form of exercise. If this was 400 BC, they'd be lifting great big boulders off the ground and then carving shit on them to brag "Bybon, son of..., threw me over his head with one hand" (350 lb rock), instead of posting it on facebook or twitter. Crossfit isn't why they are strong, its just the current means or "sport" in which they test themselves or train. Next decade it will have another name and those same people, or same type of people, they'll still be beasts.

They have no idea what you're talking about and just don't understand.

Funny thing about all the globo-bros talking shit about crossfit is 99% of them would get their asses handed to them in any given wod by any average crossfit gym's top females.

Why can't you just say workout? Do you have to do penance for using the wrong non-cult approved terminology? 10 burpees and then lick the toes sweat from your high priest trainers feet? Crossfit's top females have more testosterone than I do, because they are injecting. Or do you think women get 17" arms, 18" necks, and 30" legs naturally? lol

steinhab,

He means the top housewives you will find in any neighborhood crossfit gym, not the serious competitors.

They will outlift you, outrun you and do more dead hang pull ups and push ups than you can, then go pick up their kid from soccer practice.

If it weren't for OPSEC, I could literally show you just that.

A lady at my gym has won NUMEROUS (for fun) pull-up competitions at various events. They have been rather impressive to watch. I'll have to ask her, but I believe she can do in the high 20's strict pull-ups. If you saw her at the grocery store you'd never know.....

No, it's a back exercise. It doesnt stop until someone challenges you and says cheat ups aren't doing shit for back and arm strength compared to dead hangs. Then suddenly its about explosive force, until someone explains that high reps isn't how you build explosive force. Then it's about core strength, which is a catch all for every exercise ever created where the abs might play a part.

Well I think you're cheating if you do deadhangs without added weight.

See how that works?

Sometime when there's pullups in workouts it's not for strength. You can do pullups with added weight for strength, but then if you have to do a whole bunch and you're trying to keep heart rate high because you're working on conditioning, it doesn't really make sense to do deadhangs now does it? No, you want to get them done quickly because you're not working on strength at that time, you're working on conditioning.

It's not that complicated.

Not a "former" Marine. And when it comes to the PFT I get my 20 with plenty left in the tank. I don't even DO kipping pullups, but I recognize there is a time and place for them.

The only thing worse than a CF cultist are the CF haters that refuse to use common sense.

This is bullshit and shows how clueless you are. I've known a few non-juicing women that could do 20 deadhangs...and also deadlift 300#.

Of all the annoying people in the thread, you're actually taking the cake. You can't present a coherent argument. All you do is make fun of pullups, accuse them juicing, and talk about how tough you USED to be.

Yeah, I'm sure kipping pull ups is for your heart rate. Lol, I love reading you cultist who focus on cheating exercise. And i don't care how good shape you are, keep doing fucked up pullups, you deserve all the scorn. Especially being a former Marine...

Next decade it will have another name and those same people, or same type of people, they'll still be beasts.

http://odysseus.culture.gr/java/image?foto_id=5101&size=m1

You want to compare yourself at 18 years old to a 43 year old soccer mom now.

The problem is.... "now" is when you're doing all the talking.

At least it's been agreed that the person whose mouth is writing the biggest checks has no ability to cash them.

You're just not about that life, bro.

By the way, I see the little gymnastics girls do kipping pullups all the time.  It seems that kipping makes it easier to do more pullups, as well as to muscle up onto a bar.

For gymnasts, pullups are a way of getting up to the bar to do their routines. In Crossfit, the goal of the exercise is to get good at exercising. If the exercise is about brute strength, how is using momentum or mastering form to get more weight up, or more reps, not essentially cheating.

This is where I'm coming from. Watch a video of early Olympic weightlifting videos, those guys were using brute force to get those weights up because they didn't master technique, they didn't have coaches who became popular teaching methods to get around hurdles, to get max weight with minimum effort. If it was baseball, or football, or something else, a sport where the mind is just as much a component as the body, I'd be all for it. But sports designed around exercising are cheating themselves by using those techniques. Kipping is to pullups what knee wraps are to squats. They defeat the whole purpose of doing the exercise and competing, which is to find out who is the strongest, who is the best true athlete, not who is the best coached.

God, every time you post something I think "surely it can't be any dumber than his last post" then you go and outdo yourself. Bravo. Oly lifting is cheating? Good god. Knee wraps are cheating? For fuck's sake you are absolutely fucking clueless.

Hey speaking of that, back to that "read good" thing:

You realize that crossfit uses both dead hang strict and kipping pullups for different workouts, right? I asked this earlier, but you might have skimmed over it.

Look, bottom line is that when I was big into CF I would wager I would have beat you- in your prime- at just about every physical event there is... you can talk shit all you want but it doesn't change the fact that people that do CF seriously, even non-competitors that aren't juicing are in damn good shape. For some reason you can't accept that and want to just make fun of them.

Yes, CF has problems. No, it's not perfect. Yes, some CFers are annoying as fuck (though not nearly annoying as the haters I'm learning). But at the end of the day it's a good program with a good community that helps a lot of people reach their goals.

If you want to keep talking shit, I suggest you post your best concurrent numbers:

Squat
DL
Snatch
Clean
Jerk
1 mi run
3 mi run
Deadhang pullups
400m run

Anything else?

That's part of the reason you see so much crappy movement in the crossfit world. Too many people thought the same thing when the games started being televised, and don't actually care about the clients or being a good coach.

Huh. You sure claim to know a lot for someone that's never even been in a CF gym.

Never been to the Moon either. Know its not made of cheese.

Yeah because that's the same thing. Jesus that might be the worst analogy I've ever heard. Seriously, did you think that was witty or somehow biting? It's embarrassing is what it is.

No, embarrassing is that you think I need to do a WOD at a Box in order to comment how fucking stupid crossfit is.

Except you have demonstrated very thoroughly a lack of understanding of how stupid crossfit is. Because you don't seem to know anything about it.

I dogged on CF a lot. And then I decided I hated being scrawny and weak. I had tried going to the regular gym before but I always lost motivation after a few weeks. So then I said fuck it and signed up for CF. I gave it a legitimate chance and I'm really glad that I did. It just fits me better than a regular gym. You get to know all the people who you're working out with and you're all doing the same workout together. I dunno, It works for me. I don't tell people I do it because of all the negativity people have towards it, which is mostly for no reason.
