Update 10/5.2

Well, as long as we were fixing the wing angles, we decided to dive in and fix how the aft section of the wings mated up with the fuselage too.

We were about 2 inches high, leaving the fuselage hanging below the wings.  This was not acceptable.  We debated how to fix it.  Nothing was a great answer, but we decided to scab onto the wing edge, and raise the ribbing up to meet the fuselage bottom edge.

This looks like shit, but once we skin the wings it should be hidden.  It also will face the ceiling with the bottom up on the shuttle.

The results look good, and have a nice smooth transition from wing to fuselage to wing.

This is the beginning of the cargo bay air lock.  The kids designed it in cad, and had it cut out with the shop bot in woods class.

Much of the rest of it will be soft fabric

The skinning on the nose is almost complete.  We also have one of the cowling almost completely skinned.  This guy stayed an extra hour and a half, after school to keep working in this.

Not to be harsh, but that won't look good with that big of step in it between the raising and the rest of the wing.   Sheeting on wing will look off when lit from below.   I'd taper it in another spar or two.

This is from experience building R/C aircraft in the same ways, but with lighter wood.

We are planning on only having the sheeting attaching to the 1/4" ribbing.

I started to post about the wing angle twice, and both times I stopped, thinking I didn't want to disrupt progress. I finally opted to send an IM. Glad it wasn't too hard to straighten out. Looks much better.

Update 10/6

T shirt designs

We have 3 designs right now.   We can modify them if we need to.  We are hoping to offer all three.    Nothing is set in stone, but here is what we are thinking:

Design 1=  Flight Operations
front

back

Design 2=  Shuttle Crew
front

back

Design 3= Shuttle Command

Update 10/6.2

We got the cowlings covered over the last couple days.   We have them semi-permanently mounted up there.

We took the doors off and flipped the shuttle over to start the skin on the bottom.  The wings are slumping quite a bit, but with the tethers, we can raise them up about 6" pretty easily.

We are trying to make the mating of the wings and fuselage as flawless as possible.    We think we have it worked out so that they should over lap slightly.  We will see.

I love #1 just for the silliness, but if I could have just one, it would be #2, which is closest to how you'll display it.  Thanks for giving a shoutout to the folks @ Rockwell.  If you could find a Rockwell retirees forum I bet you could fund your next 3 projects.

I told the students that we have to think about the different markets we would be making these for.  They aren't fond of #1, but I told them it's not really aimed at you.

I'm hoping arfcom can give a little feed back on hese.  We can surely make all three, or if one design isn't popular with anyone, we can delete it or modify it.

Much as I like #1, I'm betting some <censored> would claim that image was under copywrite the day after you got the shirts. Otherwise, it'd be #1 on my list. So 1, 3, 2 would be my choices.

For the T-shirts, #3 is my favorite, but I would buy a #3 and a #1.

One thought/suggestion for a door gunner shirt, put the patch on the front, and the back of the #3 shirt as the back, if the students don't like such a large door gunner.

I would not be worried about it. There are thousands of images of the space shuttle in that position with door open in the NASA domain. They are public as it is a government entity.  As long a you do not include the image of a famous person you should be OK.  As for the door gunner if you drew it I doubt there is a close copy out there.

Sunday 10/9 Update

Little late with these, but we made some good headway on Friday.

The bottom was fully skinned, so we decided to start on the wings and see how they would mate up with the fuselage.  We ended up adding a piece of 1/4x3/4" along the bottom edge of the wing next to the fuselage.  This puts the wing edge up just enough that the skin overlaps the fuselage skin.  By leaving it a bit long on the wing side, when pulled to the fuselage with screws, the skin overlaps about an inch.  Should be easy to glue that down, once it's in the air and displayed.

It was fun watching the kids debate how we should get the skins to mate up, and what would be the best answer.  I love not knowing the right answer and having them have to problem solve to get something that will work.

We ran out of drawing boards on Friday morning and I was thinking we were pretty screwed for the next week or so, but my order came in Friday afternoon, so we now have plenty.  Good timing, huh.....?

Might be an interesting week.

We had yesterday off.   I'm leaving Friday though Tues to hunt with my son, so the shuttle project will be unsupervised for a few days.

My stress meter is off the charts for this, but I think I have it somewhat planned out so nothing too permanent can be ruined.

I'm going to plan out with my lead students on what I want to happen while I'm gone and have them take over the supervision of different details.

There may be many tiles cut out over those days I'm gone.

Update 10/11

More skinning the bottom of the wings.  We have found a difficult area.....the wing edge.  Each wing edge had to be redone several times as we didn't like the way the boards were laying across the curve.  We seem to have a working method now.

This young lady needed something to do today on the shuttle, and I'm preparing to be gone, so she's cutting the black mats into 1 1/4" strips.   Then I told her we would be cutting them into 1" x 1 1/4" squares............

She had a stunned look on her face at first when she realized what we were doing.

Update 10/13

We finished the bottom skinning and flipped it over again, right side up.  Kids began working on the sides and seeing how the bottom wing edges slipped over the fuselage.  Looks and works really well.

We are going to wait on the front edge of the wing till we have the top skin, then determine what will work best.

We left the bottom edge of the side of the fuselage open so we can grab this thing and move it around without damaging it.  The wings cover it all up, but if, and when you see photos, you will know why we did it.

Students also started detail skinning around the cowlings and under the tail.

Up close detailed photos are always welcomed!  Post'em up!  I've been snagging photos posted in this thread already.  They will be invaluable.

Here are some photos I took of Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center this summer.  Just cell phone pictures but show some decent detail, especially with the doors open if that's the configuration you end up going with.

Project coming along very nicely!

It occurred to me that a great thread would be one where you post only pictures of each completed project. A couple of shots of each finished one.  Rather than have to search back through all the past threads.  Kind of an online display case (in case it hasn't been done before and I missed it).

Just an idea.

Keep up the good work!
