That's a clear photo.   Half of those things could be modeled by using a bare coax connector, like what you get at Home Depot to put on the end of wire.  Just leave out the wire and you'd have something looking close.

I know it is an ART class, so are these supposed to be rendered with paper and paint, or is using a pre-existing something close allowed?

"Enterprise, this is Ground Control."
"Ground Control, Enterprise here, go ahead."
"Enterprise, you need to hold at 125 Angels."
"Say again, Ground."
"Enterprise, hold ascent at 125 Angels. Your cable is unplugged."
"Ah, Ground Control, we don't have a lot of spare juice in this buggy."
"Roger, Enterprise. But we're on a union contract here. Still looking for a union electrician. You want cable, or not?"
"Confirming hold at 125 Angels for cable connection. Can't miss Bachelor Survivor Island."
"Copy that, Enterprise. Ground Control out."

Update 11/14

We had Friday off for State Football last week.   Hopefully we can cram a bunch in before next week.  We have Wed-Friday off next week for Thanksgiving.

The tail is getting some final texture details.....still.

Top windows getting cut out this morning.

Satellite still in pieces.

The bells are getting a little caulking between pieces.  I know.   Still a little rough as far as texture goes, but I have hopes that with a few more details, and paint, they will be passable.    She did an excellent job of making them symmetrical.

Details on the hatch going well, but we are redoing some of the tile work.

Tiling still going on the wing.   Making good progress.

No idea, but I had to use this:

Might be one of the wind tunnel mockups or a proof of concept of some sort. From what I was reading it sounds like there was only one that was operational.

Update 11/14.2

One wing down!!!   Well,  at least as far as tiles go.

Student s started putting some paint down today.....at $37 a gallon.  Uggg.

We decided to try some Uboat gray paint thst we had remaining on the wing edges.  Seems to look pretty good, but remember we will be lightening this quite a bit with airbrush.

One bad point today, and I wondered if this might happen, the water color paper on the edges puckered a bit.  Not sure if they will pop out when it dries or not.  If not we may have to do some plaster/bondo along the edges.  Not good.  I thought we'd be good, as the kids had wet the paper when it was applied so it was stretched pretty good, but apparently not enough.

Sadly, most of my students haven't seen it.

I need to figure out if my classroom projector will play movies from my Vudu account.  My old one wouldnt.    I had to have the DVD.

Monday and Tues next week we may have to do some serious research and watch "Space Cowboys "

Just make sure to fast forward through the "Watch the gazelle" scene with Afflect and Liv Tyler.  Might be pushing it a bit for the  younger eyes in your class...

Wing edges don't look too bad today.   We will probably still do a little body work on some of the noticeable "dents" but they are pretty shallow, and should cover over fairly easily.

Many students are taking a day off of the shuttle to work on a bear rug, so I'm not sure how far we will get today.

What is your plan to deal with the white between the tiles? will you airbrush the whole underside of the wing with a matte black or gray?
The real shuttle spaces between the tiles definitely don't look white.

Well, according to this photo, they are pretty light in many areas.   It may be from the gasses and burning on lift off, but they are clearly light in this photo.   You know, my favorite photo.

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/images/shuttle/sts-114/hires/iss011e11078.jpg

There will be lots of airbrushing over the tiles before we are all done.   Hopefully, it will look fairly authentic when finished.

Yes, there are scorch marks of some sort, around the tiles, and the lines seem to be following the slipstream (correct term?) of re-entry.

But, you can see that the deep cracks really are dark

Awesome photos.

Not sure we will be able to get both.

On the front and nose, I'll see if we can get something close, but the dark lines, probably won't happen that easily.  It will be difficult to see them at all with the dark tiles.  They are just too small.

The white burn marks, you might be able to recreate with an airbrush, with very low paint flow.

Or, you could possibly use ground (with sandpaper) white chalk, applied with a brush, then affixed with a matte finish spray paint (Krylon makes it, and available at Wal Mart)

Mural plans got a little more defined today for the presentation area.

We hope to have a large view of earth from space.....1/2 Earth rising?   Something like that.

Above it will be the full poem by John Gillespie Magee-  High Fight

Next to that, or near it will be part of Reagan's speech after the Challenger disaster.

We've got some students lined up to start this, soon, or at semester.

An easy way to achieve the white streaking on the tiles would be to use posit-notes as a quick mask, and hit it with an airbrush.

Not sure exactly of the orientation of Ikon yet.   Maybe inverted like the shuttle.    I've got pictures i'll post later of the start of construction.

The Canadarm will not move.    We did get the robotics materials today, so construction of those pieces will begin soon.    I will be happy just to get the doors moving.

Update 11/16

Ok, Ikon is underway.  It was a bit of a rough start, with some failures to launch, but now they seem to have a method to their madness.  If I don't interrupt them too much they should have the framework done fairly quickly.

This jumble of rings is the airlock being organized and readied for assembly. It too might get done if I don't make the engineer go help scale the hinges for the cargo bay door actuators.

The second wing made good progress in tiling.  There was probably twice as many tiles pictures here by the end of the day.

The hatch on the front got retired today.  The star camera ports are all sculpted.  Tiling will probably begin on the nose in the next few days.  We might put black paint down first.

Finally, this Yupo painting was looking pretty cool, so I thought I should share it.  Depending on how this turns out, I may have to work on getting this donated to be displayed with the shuttle.  Yupo is watercolor sprayed on a plastic canvas.  Resists like spiderwebbing decoration, watercolor paper, string, feathers, all can be used to create images in the free flowing color.

"Space Cowboys" is on for either Friday, or Monday.

Seems the only way forwards is an endowment for an Art Museum attached to the High School, where he can make his own false ceilings any color, and at a safe distance.  Then his school might get associated with artists, and Guns would quit due to the liberal influx.

Best leave it as it is, now that I think about it.

As for the updated photos, you mentioned having a plan for the 'rough seams' between the 'thermal blanket tiles'...  Would love to hear about it!

The idea of black ceiling tiles is not bad at all.   I'm not sure I'm willing to risk my life bringing that idea up to the custodian.

Painting the ceiling tiles I think is ok, as even the Army Recruiter gets away with that in his building.

As for the blanket seams, yes, they look really rough.  Once we get to the airbrushing, we will see if we can camo them up a bit using a hard edge.
