Can anyone tell me why any modern ships at all have 5" guns, let alone "stealth" ships?

Hey guys, let's spend $70,000,000 on a stealth ship but put this huge radar catching signature on the bow so the old admirals are happy.

That's not even a 5" gun, its a 3".

Do we have any supersonic anti ship missiles in our inventory?

No.

Inside the radar horizon, it's possible to employ SM-2 against surface targets.  Limited utility and lethality, but the missile was wffective against the IRN corvette, Joshan.

NGFS

Small surface targets like FIAC

Slower air targets

It will take hours for that ship to cover distances the carrier's planes will cover in minutes. It will never get close enough to a carrier to do anything other than be sunk.

Yes the SM-2 is an anti-aircraft missile, but is very good at hitting surface ships. HARM is also supersonic, and although its an anti radar missile, it can certainly hit a surface ship.

I think its funny that looks like an old block 0 CIWS on the back.  Damn gun is like 25 years old along with the radar tech on it.

From what I understand the Air Wing on the PRC's carrier is nowhere near comparable to a USN equivalent.  Four or five of these and the carrier will have its hands full defending itself and not projecting power.

Correct for the air wing, but the Luyang II DDGs escorting it are very good and getting better.

Taiwan should be investing in UW warfare, like mining the straits and harbors and of course torpedoes.  That would mess up China's day, since they aren't targeting military ships, but merchant shipping that feeds the nation..    If you get a SSN Seawolf class with tons of mines, say about 100 of them, put them all around populated sea areas like Shanghai, Hainan, and Laioning.  It would disrupt feeding the nation of oil, coal, fishing, and grains.
And de-mining isn't a strong suit of the chinese PLA/N.  So expect them to blow up a few boats just trying to rid the harbors and straits from mines.  Yes, they can fly products out, but why fly out those Wal-Mart products??

The new Taiwan Corvette is nice..  Probably mess up someone's day when they launch all eight of the ASM...  I imagine they upkeep of the carriers aren't that great, so the PLA/N won't throw up a good defense up ; hell, they can't keep the boat out for long..

Lol. Surely not in the pics.

Because you could see that hulk from 12 miles away with the naked eye.

While it certainly wont sink a capital ship, it is quite effective against topside sensors. Certainly much easier to use than a Harpoon.

ETA: Shot both at the ex USNS Saturn

If it's carrying 8 mach 2.5 missiles with a range of 200 km, it doesn't need to get close.

At a distance of 200 km, the flight time of one of those missiles is only going to be around 4 minutes.

Although the boat was spec'ed and desighed at 38 knots, the Taiwan naval  officer released to the press that it was able to achieve 44 knots during series of test runs....

Also, the huge doors would open up during missile launch, for missile exhaust...

There are torpedo launchers, which are actually located behind the smaller doors next to the large openings... the housing of the 3 inch gun was said to have been designed to reduce radar signature as well....

The block0 Phalanx ciws was pulled out from a decommissioned ship, as this is still considered an experimental project, run on a somewhat tight budget...

Kinda sounds  like a few people dont get the difference between china and Taiwan....

51% + of our countrymen were RETARDED enough to RE-elect Obama, it stands to reason that a good percentage of US here are retarded enough to not know the difference between Taiwan and China.

 Aren't they part of Obama's 57 states?

OUCH! Diet cherry 7-up out of my nose. That's just mean!
