There was some idiot at the end claiming "29 years of service in the military" saying that we shouldn't hold it against him because we as Americans "put him in the uniform, let a drill sergeant scream at him, then sent him off to some foreign country to do our bidding" or some other nonsense. Guy basically said we shouldn't hold it against him because YOU wouldn't be able to handle it if you were in his shoes. Weird that none of his other squad mates had those issues...... You think Big Green is wishing they had declared him a deserter now?
I understand why they wouldn't: obvious morale and propaganda issues as well as,to be honest, there would have been those claiming he had been abandoned and such a declaration was a cover up and the good chance that without being useful as a "POW",the Talibs might make him a horror movie star. This will blow over within weeks unless he hits the talkshow circuit, which will be funny if they also have his unit comrades on. |

As it stands, Gitmo is a valuable propaganda tool for anyone who hates the US. To Al Qaida it's the gift that keeps on giving. Had something like Gitmo been set up by the Clinton administration when OBL was offered up by a couple of countries that found him obnoxious, there wouldn't fucking BE an Al Quaeda. See, the Clinton administration didn't take OBL because they didn't know what to do with him once they had him. They lacked the stones to send some guys from Dam Neck to shoot the fucker in the back of the head, and they didn't want to set up a Gitmo where they could pump him for intel because it was all very messy. ...and that led to multiple terrorist attacks which helped give credibility to a strain of radical islam that had been a pain in the ass for at least thirty years by that point but got kicked into overdrive once the towers fell. The fact that a bunch of murdering savages cites something in their propaganda doesn't make it true, son. It's short sighted and counter productive to keep them. Now the problem won't go away. Gitmo was set up to keep animals in a cage so they could be pumped for intel. It was made necessary by the acts of the animals themselves. The Obama administration has pretty much dispensed with the idea of pumping these guys for intel and is doing all that is possible to kill them rather than capture and get more info. They want dead terrorists, not more guys they can store in Gitmo...and despite this it doesn't seem like the islamic world is all that happy with dead jihadists either. It's almost as if there's no pleasing radical jihadist nutcases. |

Why Team Obama Was Blindsided by the Bergdahl Backlash
The president and Ms. Rice seem to think that the crime of desertion in wartime is kind of like skipping class. This is a fundamental culture clash. Team Obama and its base cannot comprehend the values still cherished by those young Americans “so dumb” they joined the Army instead of going to prep school and then to Harvard. Values such as duty, honor, country, physical courage, and loyalty to your brothers and sisters in arms have no place in Obama World. (Military people don’t necessarily all like each other, but they know they can depend on each other in battle — the sacred trust Bergdahl violated.) I don't think this deal was about Bergdahl at all. He was a way to make the deal appear better to the US public. Behind the scenes I bet the deal with the Taliban is the following -
We release their top 5 leaders and before the next Presidential election we close Guantanamo bay and release the rest of the prisoners. In return the Taliban agree to not topple Karzai until after the election and Obama's legacy is secured (and with no Afghanistan problems to derail Hillary's election). This is all about Obama's ego - he wants to bring home the only POW, he wants to close Guantanamo, he wants to be remembered as the President that left office with a stable Afghanistan and Iraq. |

If that's his plan then more power to him. After spending his entire presidency blaming everything that's not turned out well on a previous administration if he thinks that turning the Taliban loose for a promise to behave long enough for him to get out of office will earn him the "legacy" of having left a "stable" Afghanistan and Iraq then he's a Kim-Jong-Un level nutter who deserves the major bollocking he's going to get. A president cannot get to the last day of his term and holler OLLYOLLYOXENFREE!!! and thus absolve himself of any accountability for his decisions while in office. "Afghanistan was stable when I left office! It's somebody else's fault!" Nobody is going to take that seriously, and it's not going to be sufficient to bolster his grander world-leader intentions when he leaves office. |
