Assuming he was convicted of desertion; if so, what is a likely sentence he would receive? If less than, say, ten years, then he should be released based on time served in captivity of the enemy, along with the DD or whatever else goes along with it. If he truly didn't intend to desert then give him a month of leave, a POW medal, and another active duty assignment.

Post Viet Nam MIA scandals DoD puts a lot of resources into captured US or allied servicemen. Beghdal may have really screwed up, his actions may have gotten other US soldiers killed but it is better that he is free, or dead and accounted for rather than missing, As far as the 5 released from GITMO the administration is trying to find any reason at all to release them, so no great loss. |

Will be interesting to see what info comes out once he's back in US custody. Best "rumor" is that he left of his own free will. Left his weapon, NODs, and other sensitive items before. Mailed almost everything else home before leaving. Other soldiers were killed trying to find his dumb ass.
