Assuming he was convicted of desertion; if so, what is a likely sentence he would receive? If less than, say, ten years, then he should be released based on time served in captivity of the enemy, along with the DD or whatever else goes along with it. If he truly didn't intend to desert then give him a month of leave, a POW medal, and another active duty assignment.

The USA release too many terrorists anyways. May as well get something in return.

Yep.....Jefferson himself was willing to negotiate with them...till he realized that they wouldn't negotiate in good faith..then he ordered the US Navy be built.

I admittedly don't know anything about this topic, but that's a terrible accusation to make about any of our soldiers out there.  God knows a bunch of people on the internet certainly don't know the facts, and I'd assume most of the media doesn't either.  I hope this guy catches a break when he makes it home.  Sounds like he definitely deserves the benefit of the doubt.

It actually is good news, this issue probably took a lot of resources that are better spent elsewhere. Post Viet Nam MIA scandals DoD puts a lot of resources into captured US or allied servicemen.

Beghdal may have really screwed up, his actions may have gotten other US soldiers killed but it is better that he is free, or dead and accounted for rather than missing,

As far as the 5 released from GITMO the administration is trying to find any reason at all to release them, so no great loss.

That was the offical account...and propaganda.

I am glad that SGT Bergdahl, as a U.S. soldier and American citizen, will hopefully soon be home and back with his family and that those of us who sweated and bled to find him in the days and weeks following his disappearance can close this chapter of the story.

The next chapter, however, should be quite interesting.

There are people on this board who know, first hand.  They aren't allowed to talk about it.  Bergdahl is an asshole that harmed his buddies, his unit, the US military, the mission in Afghanistan and his country, through his own deliberate action.

Fuck that guy.

Been curious about this as well.  I started a thread a a year or two ago and didn't get any responses.  Seems to me he was a deserter.  Will be interesting to see what info comes out once he's back in US custody.

Best "rumor" is that he left of his own free will. Left his weapon, NODs, and other sensitive items before. Mailed almost everything else home before leaving.

Other soldiers were killed trying to find his dumb ass.

I hope he was raped by Taliban daily, and the taste of their shit covered dicks never leaves him.

Gotta link?

And he's still an American soldier.  Whatever he did or didn't do, he was one of us and we went after him.

The effort was phenomenal and even after if appeared to be pointless, it continued on a large scale for weeks.

So was this story and his release timed to coincide with the VA Story that is blowing up. Possibly a way to move the focus of the media. Shinseki resigns and the next day Begdahl is released. Now the media forgets about the VA.
