I'm a lifelong Southerner with deep deep southern roots but I have to admit that a Chicago Dog is a good option when I get tired of slaw dogs and chili dogs (with Varsity chili).

I drive by there daily in area often. I can say, that the whole American vs. Lafayette argument is BS. Lafayette winds hands down.

The older guy with gray hair who seems a bit hyper and nuttier than squirrel shit at American is a kick ass dude. If that dude is working, we'll slide into American just to take care of him. American has a habit of dropping a free fries or two on the table.

ETA:

I never get mustard on a Coney..just Chili and Onion.

Koney King on Fort makes a kick ass NY'er...has kraut on it..that gets a thin bead of mustard.

I wouldn't go quite that far, but the natural casing dog is without question the king of dogs.

Happen to like mine grilled crispy. Not quite authentic Chicago style, but whatever.

No one who lives in the area actually picks a side on one of those two. Most people would take a National any day over either of those two and you can get a National pretty much anywhere in metro Detroit instead of heading downtown.
