I got my older brother into the dead.   He went nuts and became a taper.  Started with cassettes and then to DATS...  At one time he had a DAT tape rack from floor to ceiling  that was 6' wide and completely filled.

And he doesn't mess around when it comes to audio, his mics alone had to be a few grand.

I ain't got time fo dat.

It's like licorice.  Not everybody likes licorice, but those who do like licorice REALLY like licorice.

I've got a few thousand hours of them.  Fair to middlin' collection.  Taper back in the day.

My rig back in the day was a D5 and Nak 300 guns.  State of the art, circa 1983.  Had probably $3 grand tied up in it.

I fell out of taping for years in the late 90s and just started getting back into it a few years back.  My rig now is light-years ahead of the analog rig; and have maybe $500 in gear ($200 for the M-10 and about $300 for the Church mic set, omnis and cards).  The only thing I still use from the old days is my trusty Shure 15-foot stand.  Seems like I'm the only guy who has one of them, and they cost $175 new these days.  Got mine for probably $50 back in the 80's.  And I can haul everything around in a tiny Pelican 1200.  And batteries last for about 30 hours, instead of about 2 hours.  AND NO MORE TAPE FLIPS!!  And I can record 33 hours STRAIGHT THROUGH on a 32 GB Micro-SD, at 44.1/24 bit.  It's simply amazing.

Another fan.  Saw them around a dozen times in the eighties/early ninties; also saw JGB as well as Rat Dog.  I still listen to them, and a lot of Jam Bands (except Phish), particularly on road trips.

Not really a hippy but I finally sold this last year.

They never really "did it" for me.

Several of my older cousins are/were huge deadheads. Used to follow them around and were fully into the lifestyle. They knew I am a big music fan and tried to get me into it, it just didn't strike a chord with me.

Trying to think of a good way to put it. I respect the Dead for what they were and I understand the passion their fans have for the music and surrounding lifestyle, it just isn't my gig.
And I say that as someone who likes music from that era and is a fan of other genre defying bands like Primus and Pink Floyd.

That is basically what they were.

A jam band that played "songs" for a long time.

You had to be on massive amounts of drugs to endure that torture.

Their shows were often "hosted" and "catered" by local Hells Angels bikers. Big Gulp size beers for 1$, burgers & fries cheap too!

Ya, they got stoned and fucked up on stage and the music generally suffered but there were more time when they just fuckin' rocked. Lots of guest musicians. You never knew what direction the show would go. If it sucked, you could walk out.

Got to see them 7 times in the mid 90's before Jerry died. Last show for me was the one in Noblesville IN where fans crashed the gate and destroyed some stuff. Have also seen Ratdog, Further fest, and The Dead (Warren Haines playing in Jerry's place). My favorite era was when Pigpen was still around, love me some 'Easy wind', 'Lovelight', 'King bee', 'Hurts me too'.  Jamming to 'Cosmic Charlie' right now.

No Jerry but it was a good show

I enjoy the 1971-1973 Dead the best. Still had the bluesy rock n roll sound.

For the record I do love me some Widespread Panic.

For age reference, I'm 40.

I got into Phish last high school, early college.  Never listened to the Dead because all the Dead fans in my school were mostly scumbag wierdos.   A few years ago, I started listening to the them on Pandora.  I'm hooked, love them.

Sugar Magnolia and Dark Muddy River are my favorites.

I am not a rabid fan but I have always liked their music. For all the Hippie association they seem to have, their music is more of a folk, rock and country fusion to me.

Funny story, a few years ago, my Father (born in 1924 and a career military man) and I spent a month fishing in Alaska. When we picked up the rent-a-car in Anchorage I popped a Grateful l Dead mix CD in the player. Half-way to Soldotna, my Dad asked; "who is this band? I really like it!". I told him it was the Grateful Dead and he said he had heard of them but always thought only smelly hippies listened to them. I replied ; "oh not ONLY smelly hippies". In his 80s, my Father discovered something that he didn't know he liked because of me. It is a major milestone in a relationship when Fathers learn something from their Sons. Those mix CDs became the soundtrack for our  summer of fishing whether we were on the road or drinking whiskey by a fire. When I hear "Truckin" it always takes me back in my mind to driving in Alaska, sleeping in cheap motels, drinking and fishing with my Dad. What a long, strange trip it was.
