Because I've had SIGs before.

I'll sit this one out until we're sure they've ironed out the wrinkles.  Which I do actually expect to go smoothly.

But from a practical standpoint, the 5.56 is adequate for the things I use it for, and parts/ammo/tools availability will trump any incremental improvements for a good long while.  I'm not buying guns to sit with them on the couch and stroke them while watching TV, and the amount of money this costs could get you a 6.5CM/.260 AR10, a couple of barrels, and enough ammo to shoot out the barrels.

So IYO does the improvements warrant such a price?

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

I say this because if the ammo becomes popular other manufacturers will make rifles in the caliber.

At the “Special Edition” Price? Absolutely not.

I’m really excited to get some more rifles in the caliber and to do some testing, the Cross especially.

Think of this gun as a flagship, and an indication where the market could go. I think they did a fantastic job with the rifle. It looks and feels really nice, the functions work really well.

Regardless of caliber, this setup at $3-4K is gonna be awesome.

Looks like a nice rifle, but any "superiority" over the AR that it has is immediately negated by the fact that there is little-to-no support for it in terms of spare parts.

Whatever ya gotta say to convince yourself it was worth the money.

You know what’s really cool?

I have those guns with the common parts of which I have a lot of. I have other guns which are more obscure without a large chain of available support for.

Most of the people here whining about the increased capability don’t even have the option to pick between the two. So it’s just fox and the grapes at that point.

I don’t have to convince myself of anything. My identity isn’t linked to any particular gun. I can shoot whatever caliber I want.

Regardless, it’s a really cool gun with a very interesting approach to many things that make it a cool marker in the timeline of firearms development. Even more so, with higher pressure rounds becoming more normal, hopefully it will be a pipeline of development for better and longer lasting barrels which will trickle over into other aspects of firearms technology.

You think the ballistic improvements of the 6.8x51mm are only 5% over a 5.56?

Even if the Spear truly is a superior rifle, $8k?.... and people are paying over $20k?!

Even if that round is superior to the 5.56, what % of Spear owners would ever really utilize it's slightly better potential in a serious situation? Is that trade off worth having a rare caliber?

I've overpaid for some Knights stuff in my days but come on man. And it's Sig. They just can't help thinking they're smarter than everyone else in the room. They've definitely had some hits but overall their penchant for making new shit every 5 minutes produce more misses IMHO, but maybe this one will prove to be a winner. It does have nice features and looks cool I suppose.

Why are you comparing the 6.8x51mm to the 5.56 in the first place?

Better comparison would be 7mm-08.  AKA, the 7x51

Sorry, but that is gross.  Give me a SCAR 17S in 7.62 all day every day over this latest Sig junk.  Also, if Sig wins the contract (which I don't think it will), we all know it's because they will be the lowest bidder and not because of the merits of the firearm.  It's how Sig does business these days.

However you gotta stroke yourself my man. I'm happy for you that you got one, yet sad that you have to tell us how cool it is before you even know yourself. Someone has to bid it up on GB. As they say, weird flex but okay.

Sell me those gucci ARs it's gonna replace though, their capability has been diminished so .50 on the dollar should suffice, no?

It’s because this is a first limited run, highly limited, and all two stamp guns.

When the actual commercial guns come out, they will likely be much more reasonable.

Id say the lower ammo capacity and seemingly much greater recoil makes it inferior.  (I dunno for sure about the recoil I have not shot one, but it seems to kick people's asses in videos.)

With the size/weight and 20 round mag capacity shouldn't we be comparing it to .308?

Ill give you that it is superior to that.

It’s not even a comparison when you step up to 308.

5.56 is at least still a viable cartridge in modern times, 308 is a relic of a bygone era being clung onto until it’s dying breath.

Also...SIG can take their Indian metallurgy, constant revisions, and Ron Cohen and shove them firmly up their ass. SIG used to make nice stuff, i won't spend a buck on any of their asian mass produced shit now. Fuck SIG.

But muh SPEAR is made in the YOU-ESS-EH! That's swell, get back to me when SIG cares about quality products instead of slapping their name on horseshit. That 0.2mm diameter and 150 fps is probably not worth 8 times the price per round.  Well, it definitely isn't worth it, to me.

AR10 is not the same form factor.

And even if it was, other than some niche runs it’s not a common configuration, and I’m sure it suffers from most AR10 platforms of neutering the performance capabilities of the cartridge.

Now that would go through some stuff! Well, if it could fly right. I don’t know what I don’t know but it seems to me it would need a real slow twist to have the barrel last more than a few dozen rounds.

Very cool collection!
