I wouldn't bet against them figuring out how to keep them running. Their buddies in Chyna will probably grab a couple and have repro parts up and running in months. |

They were flying them almost immediately, vid from last week. This one says piloted by captured ANA pilot but I bet the Pakis are providing pilots and maintenance.

Only so many flight hours before they’ll be grounded for lack of maintenance, and they’re wasting them doing dumb shit. These are the people our politicians allowed us to lose to.

I thought the goat herders were too stupid to fly our advanced equipment?
I bet biden is loving the hurricane right now. It distracts the stupids from Afghanistan. |

Why did that helo have the Brit bullseye emblem on it? And did we start using a different camo scheme for Crashhawks? That looked like a standard Blackhawk paint job mixed with desert and woodland.

I guess on the plus side Sikorsky building in 503 hours of maintenance per flight hour will pay off. No parts= ticking time bomb. (Joking about the maintenance hours, I'm not sure the exact number)
Eventually they're all just going to fail spectacularly if iran can't figure out a way to get parts. Too bad we didn't leave the "stealth" ones that are impossible to fly behind. At least we could have honey potted them. |

Quoted: If you told me at the start of the invasion that just before the 20th anniversary of 9/11 the Taliban would drive America out and be flying around in Blackhawks I never would have believed it. I thought the US backed Northern Alliance had the Taliban on the run in the first few months and it would be over in less than a year. View Quote They/we did. The Northern Alliance in the north and Karzai’s ragtag “army” in the south (out of Tarin Kowt and into Kandahar) had the Taliban on the run and just missed capturing/killing Mullah Omar. But you are right, after seeing so much military success in the early years (up until 2014ish) I never would have guessed things would turn out this way. The key mistake being (just like Iraq), departing before the indigenous forces were capable of assuming the fight. Granted, one could argue that they would never be capable of assuming the fight, but Gen LeMay’s famous quote comes into play once again: “if you kill enough of them, they stop fighting”. We didn’t kill enough of them and the Afghans couldn’t kill enough of them. The “put an Afghan face on things” began as early as 2011ish. It was downhill from 2013 on (IME). |

The big mistake is the US Military was it didn’t strip out the stability augmentation systems or at least corrupt the software. View Quote The Afghan were capable of keeping Soviet-era Russian equipment flying but those aircraft have a completely different maintenance philosophy: basically no field maintenance. I doubt even the mechanics we trained will be able to keep them flying for long; I could be wrong. Take away spare parts and it gets even harder. |

View Quote They won’t ground anything. No one is going to tell the Supreme Abee Dobie they won’t fly the mission. They will crash them instead of being beheaded for refusing the mission. |

Quoted: With our gift of helicopters, being a valuable pilot or mechanic is a sure fire "get out of having your head cut off" card. View Quote Yep: the Afghan pilots (and everyone else for that matter) were known for switching to the winning side whenever one side got the upper hand. Several of the pilots we worked with had fought against each other (and even killed one of the other’s family members) in the post-Soviet civil war. They actually laughed about it: “He killed my brother when he was Taliban!” “That’s nothing, he killed my father when he was North Alliance.” “But now we are all brothers in the Afghan Militia Force!” Crazy. |
