Started watching Manhunter and wondered what GD thinks of Kazinski. I was aware of the case but never read the details much.

His manifesto reads like a typical day in GD.

The leftist’s feelings of inferiority run so deep that he cannot tolerate any classification of some things as successful or superior and other things as failed or inferior. This also underlies the rejection by many leftists of the concept of mental illness and of the utility of IQ tests. Leftists are antagonistic to genetic explanations of human abilities or behavior because such explanations tend to make some persons appear superior or inferior to others. Leftists prefer to give society the credit or blame for an individual’s ability or lack of it. Thus if a person is “inferior” it is not his fault, but society’s, because he has not been brought up properly.

Unfortunately for his victims, Kaczynski started his cry for attention before the Internet gained popularity.

Had he the self-publishing outlet for mass distribution of his manifesto (ironic, for sure) such as Twitter, YouTube, etc. he might not have turned to bombs to get his message out.

Then again, maybe he'd just be sending bombs to Silicon Valley...

My take has been he was very intelligent and many of his conclusions were correct.

However his actions showed a severely mis-aligned moral compass.  I have seen other examples of high IQ individuals that dont conform to social norms.  It just doesnt compute for them, as some norms fall outside the patterns of pure logic.

This would be the danger of A.I., just like the movie iRobot, the logic is sound that you must kill people to protect them.  I imagine Ted's brain worked similarly.

Doesnt make it right, but it's explainable and, to me, a little tragic.

According to the tv series which is probably mostly false, the FBI agent who profiled him moved into a cabin in the mountains to live like Kazinski. Weird.

It's actually a good argument for the role of human agency in R/acc.

That guy is what happens when someone doesn't have one friend in the whole world.  He's like Private Pyle in FMJ, or the Joker in TDN.  They come to resent existence because they only see the suffering side of life, no light or brightness.  At that point, they each take a slightly different path.  

There is no point to living if there are no other people in the world, and that is the position they are in.  They think everyone else is also alone, so the compassionate and logical thing to do is end everyone's suffering.  

They fail to understand that while everyone does suffer at some point (or even daily), most people have a "why" that allows them to bear their cross without wishing for annihilation.
