I thought all of the 13th Infantry Regiment was assigned to basic training. Today I learned.

For better or worse, units tend to move around some.

Take the Ramrods from 2-2IN.

Germany to TX, to KY, to LA.  All in the last 20 years.

Was a Marine in Desert Storm.   Joined the Army later on and wore this.   Caught alot of shit for it and authorization was a grey area at the time.
Before I got out, there was a special modification to the regs for us to wear them.   Wasn't worth the flack I got.

My father wore the 1st Marine Division patch when he was in the Army Reserve. He was in a coast artillery unit that brigaded with Marines on Guadalcanal

The biggest BS for me is when I ask someone with an airborne unit as a combat patch about their service and I find out they aren’t airborne qualified and have very questionable connections to the unit.

During the GWOT many soldiers that had no intention of volunteering for airborne were sent to airborne units. Some eventually did attend jump school, some went to non-airborne units later, some ETS'ed. If that's the only unit they deployed with it's the combat patch they're stuck with.

The only two I wear, 4th ID and 25th ID.  Dug this out to see if I can find an answer here, we were given an off color 4ID patch in Iraq in 2003 that had some significance to the invasion, but I never got the entire story behind it.  From what I understood, it was authorized for wear on BDUs and DCUs as a combat patch in lieu of the standard subdued patch.  I squirrelled mine away and dug it out for this pic.

A lot of airborne units have non-paid parachutist position billets who aren't on jump status and as such get assigned by HRC without being airborne qualified.

Brigades set their own standards for subdued patches and often tried to find their own "niche". 3/3ID wore the BDU green patches on their DCUs. Its like how 3/10 mountain wears camo nets on their helmets and 101 has the brigade patches on their helmet covers.

I meant billets that would be jump status being occupied by non-airborne qualified. The idea being they need bodies for a deployment and they'll go to jump school later or get booted.

The brown patch was a divisional thing, but I never saw it at clothing sales.  They were handed out in December 03' timeframe, with no guidance on wear.  I saw a few around Speicher and a bunch at Ironhorse before we drove south in March.
