I remember reading that they eventually cut down on the destuction by modifying one into a “jump truck” by moving the engine back to basically make it mid engine, and added axle trusses, a suspension seat, rear ballast, etc.

I don't necessarily agree, but that's what I thought the OP was going to post.

ETA: little-known fact is that after failing to land numerous jumps, the GMC pickups in The Fall Guy all had to be reworked, putting the engines about a foot further back in the engine bay.
