I’ve been seeing a lot of these lately, they’re the most extreme I’ve seen but there is a definite trend.

It’s awful.

Lexus and Audi got into a grill war then Toyota starting getting the trickledown effects then BMW just went full fucking retard with it. It's horrible and compared to most folks on this site i'm pretty progressive when it comes to auto stuff but this shit needs to stop.

A lot of them will have faux grilles that don’t actually do anything and are purely for aesthetics.

I agree!
I hate those ridiculous looking grills and I always have.
I think it started when Lexus started putting those ugly front ends on their cars - pure shit.

How did we go all those years with tiny grills but no overheating.....  Yes, more performance takes more cooling usually but its not like cars today gained 870 HP from the cars of a few years ago.  I am with OP and the reason for the large grills is just  trend and I don't like it.

I will say tesla models have seen said fuck it and yes technically your correct in that respect.  Maybe it is to get people to buy EV's because anything else is just ugly and it would be like getting BC's issued in boot camp....

Why the f does there need to be a TRD Avalon?? Avalons are supposed to be soft old man cruisers.

I have specifically passed on a GX for me, and again a couple years later for the wife because of the new Lexus grille being so ugly.

I was willing to eat the mpg and outdated drivetrain.
Combined with the new grille I did not fo.

Can’t speak to the cars, but the later model trucks can handle more load for longer because they cool better with the massive grilles. Looks weird, but it works.

Isn't this due to the switch to r1234yf? These newer-gen refrigerants need MUCH larger condenser coils to perform as well as older formulas.

Sorry but they are going to continue thanks to YOUR government agencies who are looking out for your best interest. Thanks to the NHTSA you will now be able to run over pedestrians with ease

I was told it's Euro spec for ....pedestrian safety.
Yes softer front ends along with incresed room between the hood (where your head would impact) and the engine makes a kinder gentler runover.
Makes as much sense as anything.

Small grilled cars look ill-proportioned.

That's my understanding of it.
Started in Eurpe IIRC.

The taller front end is supposed to lessen the impact if a pedestrian is hit.

They also added more distance between the hood and the top of the engine to lessen the chance of
head injuries if a pedestrian lands on the hood.

Never mind. Already posted.

Euro collision specs make car front ends more squared off instead of pointy.

The do not force manufacturers to cover the front end with giant cheese graters instead of body colored bumpers. That is purely bad style.

Another stupid thing l noticed with new cars and trucks is the headlight turning off when the turn signal is activated on the Same side
WTF would they make a headlight turn off when turning?

This.

80-90% of automotive design these days is dictated by compliance to govt mandates.

Partially why crossovers are such a thing. They are the best platform to haul all those mandates around.
