Seen a few M4s in yellow and an M3 in that Primer grey colour that’s been all the rage last few years over the last few weeks. Just noticed all the little details more, they are really quite aggressive looking cars almost Japanese looking in my head. I got used to the grill after about the 4th one I saw. Yeah Black really tones it down but I think I’d go for Yellow. First one I saw I was this kid. Attached File |

Quoted: Sorry but they are going to continue thanks to YOUR government agencies who are looking out for your best interest. Thanks to the NHTSA you will now be able to run over pedestrians with ease View Quote Yep. It’s not the manufactures, it’s the federal govt mandating height restrictions. It’s why pick up truck front ends are basically the same height as a refrigerator. |
|
Quoted: That's my understanding of it. Started in Eurpe IIRC. The taller front end is supposed to lessen the impact if a pedestrian is hit. They also added more distance between the hood and the top of the engine to lessen the chance of head injuries if a pedestrian lands on the hood. Never mind. Already posted. View Quote |

Quoted: This is part of why most modern cars look the same if you made them all one color. Only so many ways to meet all the regs View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: This. 80-90% of automotive design these days is dictated by compliance to govt mandates. Partially why crossovers are such a thing. They are the best platform to haul all those mandates around. This is part of why most modern cars look the same if you made them all one color. Only so many ways to meet all the regs The part that gets me is mandates beget mandates. Side impact standards raise beltlines, rear impact and rollover protection result in huge A pillars and high trunks and bedsides so high on trucks that they have to build stepladders into tailgates. So now we need backup cameras and blind spot monitoring. Pedestrian impact and offset crash standards are raising hoodlines so high that I bet they will mandate forward facing cameras soon. |

View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: My understanding it's the "if you hit a dumbass in the road" safety standards. The hood is supposed to deflect by a certain amount, and not make a sack of useless flesh fly over the car but rather land in the street in front. Apparently the sailing through the air and hitting the ground behind the car part of it causes lots of neck, back, and head injuries that kills the idiot. They implemented a lot of stuff from these articles: https://www.edmunds.com/car-safety/protecting-pedestrians-through-vehicle-design.html https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1123098/ Some models of eurotrash cars even have "windshield breakers" that pre crack the class when they detect a meat-sack hit the bumper so they get a softer landing when they hit that part of the car. This is correct. Had a conversation with an auto engineer. He broke down some of the "safety" styling as well as where the high prices are driven from. EPA Mandates DOT mandates Technology Lawyers Lawsuits Lawyers Said every auto sold has included "fixed" charge to cover the above. I have two of what are basically the same model truck with a ~25 year age difference. Looking at them side by side it is astounding to see the amount of government in the newer one. That said, if I were to have a bad crash, I would rather be in the new one. But I am still comfortable driving the no airbag, no crumple zone, no electronic nanny truck around. |

I didn't realize the headlights switched off. The DRL, yes. (given how bright LEDs are these days, I could see mistaking the DRL for a headlight) One of my trucks the DRL is what is known as a switchback, meaning it changes from white to amber and pulls double duty as a DRL and turn signal. Headlight stays on when the signal is used. But they are aftermarket HID and LED retrofit lights. |

There are many, many trends in modern cars that need to go away. Yes, modern cars are the safest they've ever been, and that's wonderful, as someone whose entire family has benefited from the modern safety features. But can we not also have models of cars that still have class, style, and character, and aren't just checking off the list of government required features? I look at cars from the 1970s and older, and get sad because I know those are gone forever. Not just those models, but that type of car that has an identity. One you look at and think, oh that's a 77 Camaro, or whatever. No one will ever look back and say, "Wow that's a 2019 (fill in the blank)! Where'd you get that? Are you restoring it?".

They have huge radiators, AC condensers, transmission coolers, and steering coolers behind them, as they are designed to tow heavy. |

Quoted: Quoted: A lot of them will have faux grilles that don’t actually do anything and are purely for aesthetics. Not the good ones. https://i.imgur.com/ZFsV9uI.png That's not a good one evidently. I was assured in another thread that a car that will do 0-60 in 1.1s and top out at 200mph is boring and like riding around your living room on a vacuum cleaner. |
|
Quoted: Isn't this due to the switch to r1234yf? These newer-gen refrigerants need MUCH larger condenser coils to perform as well as older formulas. View Quote I bet that's part of it. R1234yf also produces hydrogen fluoride when it burns, and has etched windshield glass in burn testing. I hate the stuff and will avoid buying a vehicle that uses it for as long as possible in the hope that it is abandoned. |

Grills probably do need to be larger with the more output they are getting from engines now.
More airflow for the radiator. All that nearly goes away with electric cars. |

Quoted: I'm not an EV fan (I think it's stupid to even bother making them with current lithium tech) but anyone should be able to see that the future will be electric. View Quote The electrical generation and especially electrical transmission overhaul the United States would need to replace all the ICE commuter cars with electric vehicles would make FDR’s new deal look like a mild budget reform. You’re talking about replacing/augmenting a century’s worth of electrical infrastructure with something that can handle 2-3x the power in just a decade or so. Most people, like the people that have no idea where meat in the supermarket comes from, are too stupid to think this “electric vehicle revolution” through. Let alone the implication of mining enough lithium and copper to make efficient EVs happen. |
