I was just a passenger, although sometimes working if it was a medivac.  I always preferred them over the EC225s.

The confusion is where and when the pictures came from. On Google streetview images from June 2023, there's a 15' sign on the pole supporting the traffic lights just before the bridge. The pictures from the accident scene definitely have no sign on that pole.

I looked up Google on the bridge. One side had a sign beside the road just before the traffic light. The other direction the sign was on the bridge over the street.

I think 14' is the max height for a load on a flatbed. The clearance on the bridge shows 15'

I bet he didn't check the height or someone told him how high it was and he took their word for it.

Thankfully the investigators were able to solve the mystery.

Don't be so quick to judge.....the load could have been the right height and the bridge was too short.

We're obviously going to need to put together an investigation team and get to the bottom of this.

Thats where I am at  It does take a little bit of common sense to drive a big rig and if he had his CDL, he must have some cognitive ability, how can you not know the height of your load and the height of the bridges you need to pass under.

Does something like that automatically make you lose you CDL?

The helicopter is like 15 feet tall.  Most bridges are 16, or something.  Some bridges are lower, yes, but then again, some are taller.  It should have been mostly ok.

Back in 2007, that happened to a Bell 412SP, Serial Number 36009. It was the air ambulance for Wake Forest University Medical Center.  The helicopter was sold for salvage, and someone completely rebuilt it and now it's flying again.

If there isn't a sign to warn the operator, then the bridge is supposed to be 17 feet 6 inches or higher clearance.  It would be interesting to see what happens if the wonderful government removed the signs, and what liability the government would have, which I suspect would be less than zero.

Side note, I'm sure there's a database of every bridge clearance height in America.  Having a GPS device or app, tailored to a Commercial Driver's needs, would be worth every penny to avoid something like this.

Yeah your route is on your state permit. It doesn't mean your permit is right,

I feel any overpass that is unmarked and gets hit, the state should be 100% liable for any and all damages for negligence. That's not the way it works though.
