Was that chopper flyable when it was put on the truck?  If I was a betting kinda guy I would bet on it never flying again.

Wikipedia says an s92 costs $32 million.

+ the cost of a bridge.

I don't figure they did soo much damage to the bridge.

Wouldn't surprise me if they deemed that bridge unsafe.

Maybe it's just me, but a low boy seems like kind of a questionable way to transport something so expensive.

Is this a common thing in aviation circles?  I've watched YouTube videos about airlines receiving new planes and generally it seems most of them are flown from whatever the final assembly plant is to their respective home airport. I guess there was a reason or something as to why this thing wasn't flown wherever it needed to go?

1.  Is the helicopter in a fly able condition
2.  Do you want to put wear and tear plus $4000 per hour operating cost?
3.  Do you have a crew to fly it.

Helicopters are slow as fuck and lack range.  My Hawker 4000 is just over $5000 per hour to operate, but i can fly fly from NY to LA for 25-30k.  Not including pit stops and overnights it’s 16 hours on an s92 or $64,000.  Putting it on an RGN, Landoll, Helicopter trailer, etc becomes economical pretty fast.

The helicopter is like 15 feet tall.  Most bridges are 16, or something.  Some bridges are lower, yes, but then again, some are taller.  It should have been mostly ok.

It was mostly OK.

Most of the helicopter got under the bridge OK.

He would IF it was actually the Lady. Sadly the Lady (was converted to an air ambulance after the show cancelled) went down in 1992 in Germany killing all aboard.

Are these transported wheels-up? Why is the landing gear down (and apparently touching the ground)?

*trucking company lawyer voice*
Yer honor, my client maintains the faulty landing gear deployed unnoticed in transit, pushing the nose wheel onto the trailer, which raised the aircraft high enough to impact objects above its pre-trip height.

DENHAM SPRINGS - A vehicle towing a $30 million helicopter got stuck on Range Avenue after the top of the aircraft inadvertently rammed an I-12 overpass Friday morning.

The bridge passes 15 feet above the roadway, according to signage north and south of the span. Technical specifications for the helicopter indicate its body is 15.5 feet tall.

Range Avenue was fully reopened shortly after 10:30 a.m. after the helicopter was removed. DOTD says there is no indication the bridge sustained any structural damage at that the interstate would not be impacted.

The Denham Springs Police Department said the driver, 56-year-old Miguel Rodriguez, worked for Texas-based trucking company International Machine Transport. He was ticketed for careless operation.

Police added that the cargo was being transported from Georgia to Lafayette.

While officials have not released details on the aircraft involved, it appeared to resemble a Sikorsky S-92. Fresh from the production line, the helicopter goes for nearly $30 million.

Definition of a bad day…

When your main gear box is resting upside down on your rotor head after being ripped out of the fuselage you might be having a bad day.

A worse day is when you find out the driver that destroyed your $32M helicopter only carried $5M in insurance.

What are the standards for bridge clearance signposting?

If this approach didn't meet standards, how long has it been since it met standards?

Who's responsible for this stuff?

These people are still in their jobs, why?

Taxes, property taxes, inventory taxes, taxes I don't even know exist ... all of these things levied in the name of facilitating basic infrastructure, businesses, growth, tack on every other platitude you that comes to mind.  And these government personnel still have jobs ... why?  Everybody else in this country has to routinely justify his importance ... except government.

Your personal vehicle doesn't meet standards?  The government fines you.  The government bridge doesn't meet their own standards?  Fucking crickets.

Hope the delivery company was insured because that will probably cost a million dollars to fix.

New rotorhead components, if not the entire thing.

Numerous inspections of main shaft, gearbox, mounts, associated components and structure.

ETA:

Oh man....just saw the gearbox and swashplate photo.

That green piece of aluminum is part of the milled structure it was bolted to.

It's dead Jim.

Yeah, they apparently had a couple of incidents and some of the old timers I worked with used to comment about "PHI, fly and die".  IIRC, one of the reasons for the S76+ or ++ version was due to an incident involving a bird strike out of Houma.  It was before my time down there and I only worked out of the Gulf for a while before going back international, other than some occasional temp stuff, so I'm not a good historian for them, that saying just stuck in my head.

Mostly that.  Not only do you burn gas per hour but you need to put money into an engine overhaul account.

SMH  Another gas compressor mechanic spoke of flying a little above the waves. When they got close enough to the platform, the pilot used inertia to get enough altitude to land on the heliport. When he could talk to the pilot, he learned that it had lost one engine. He flew it back to the beach. Lol.
