Right now.
Is it actually good? Or is it one of those "best movie of all time" movies that is artistically good but not entertaining? |
|
It's entertaining. Better plot line than most of the era.
pure propaganda piece. Pick out all the subtle bits |
|
Yes, it is good. Don't expect it to reflect life in the modern world. Bogie is not a soyboy and Ingrid is not a tranny.

My second favorite Bergman movie behind Notorious. It really is a fantastic movie with some great characters.
|
|
Rick Blaine: And remember, this gun is pointed right at your heart.
Capt. Louis Renault: That is my "least" vulnerable spot. So many great lines, and Claude Rains had many of them |
|
It is classically and stylistic excellent. I enjoy blsck and white movies and this is one of my favorites.

I am shocked!
Shocked! That you haven't seen Casablanca before. |
|
In an age where they were pumping out "routine" movies every week, it wasn't expected to be the classic it became, but there you go. It IS one of the classics of the modern world. The movie was released in 1942; WWII was well underway, so the topics in it were very current.
You will enjoy it more and more the more you see it; you'll pick out details you missed before. Some spoilers: Click To View Spoiler In the scene where the Germans' singing is drowned out by the French and others singing La Marseillaise, you can see tears in several actors' eyes; they had escaped from German-occupied Europe and were genuinely affected by the singing. Madeline Lebeau, for instance, was French. The ending escape scene was added-on weeks after final shooting had ended. |
|
Very much worth watching. Excellent B/W movie. And Nb: At one point there is a "sing off" between the Nazis and the free people, mostly French. The free people sing The Marseillaise. Many have heard that anthem, but few know the words. Watch the great Mireille Matheiu sing it with subtitles. And pay attention:
La Marseillaise, sung by Mireille Mathieu. American English subtitles. |

I've never seen Casablanca.
Never seen the original The Count Of Monte Cristo (except for the short clip in V For Vendetta). I've seen the 2002 remake of The Count Of Monte Cristo and I liked it. Someday I'll watch the original. I've seen the old Treasure Island one night, and enjoyed it. |

"No, I don't think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how."
Fantastic Movie! One of my Favorites Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn were such a fantastic couple on the silver screen! |

It's not Aqua Team Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters if that's what you're asking.
But it actually is a good film |

Now try “To Have and Have Not”. Remember, Lauren Bacall is only 17 when the movie was filmed so no impure thoughts.

"He added the 'kid' to 'here's looking at you, kid'". "'Here's looking at you, Ilsa' just doesn't have the same ring." |

Casablanca is an undisputed classic.
My second favorite Bogart/Bacall film is The Big Sleep (gangster talk for murder, it's a Phillip Marlowe movie). The characters and acting are outstanding, even if you have no idea what has actually happened by the time it ends. I watched it five or six times before I got frustrated and looked it up.."The movie's a classic because of Bogie and Lauren Bacall, not because it makes sense." |

They just don't write dialog like that anymore.
Enjoy the movie. |

There is a scene where Bogie and the nazi are talking and bogie says "I also understand the perspective of the hound". It was a very clever insult, calling the german a dog to his face in that way. The nazi could say nothing.
Watch for people uprighting spilled wine glasses. The movie is chock full of little touches like that. Yeah it's old school and not always as polished as modern fare, but it beats the fuck out of watching people dressed up in tights pretending to be superheroes. |
|
I've seen it countless times over the years in bits and pieces but just a few days ago sat and watched it closely from start to stop for the first time. When it was over, I felt like I had been thoroughly entertained by an excellent movie. Maybe more so than any other movie I've watched.

I like it—it’s an anachronism these days given the snowflakes and socialistic to communistic America of today.
It’s from a time when men were men. Women were, well, you know the rest—trans & cis were limited to organic chemistry terms. It’s a little hokey & predictable, like Shane & other older movies, but it’s still good. |
|
Good movie, even if the supposed good guy was a former commie that fought in Spain

View Quote those movies from that era are fanstically written and you get such a wonderful cinematic experience because they were truly world class thespians. No CGI, no fancy cameras mounts, etc. The actors had to make the magic come through the lens to the screen. The great Irony about CGI is that instead of making movies better subtly, IE Forrest GUMP (chocked full of CGI that you don't notice) they turn movies into crap these days. |

People often quote the line, "Play it again, Sam". That is not a line in the movie.

Quoted: People often quote the line, "Play it again, Sam". That is not a line in the movie. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: People often quote the line, "Play it again, Sam". That is not a line in the movie. And the answer is: nobody. That line isn’t in the movie. We get the full scoop from the website The Phrase Finder: This is well-known as one of the most widely misquoted lines from films. The actual line in the film is ‘Play it, Sam’. Something approaching ‘Play it again, Sam’ is first said in the film by Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) in an exchange with the piano player ‘Sam’ (Dooley Wilson): Ilsa: Play it once, Sam. For old times’ sake. Sam: I don’t know what you mean, Miss Ilsa. Ilsa: Play it, Sam. Play “As Time Goes By.” Sam: Oh, I can’t remember it, Miss Ilsa. I’m a little rusty on it. Ilsa: I’ll hum it for you. Da-dy-da-dy-da-dum, da-dy-da-dee-da-dum… Ilsa: Sing it, Sam. The line is usually associated with Humphrey Bogart and later in the film his character Rick Blaine has a similar exchange, although his line is simply ‘Play it’: Rick: You know what I want to hear. Sam: No, I don’t. Rick: You played it for her, you can play it for me! Sam: Well, I don’t think I can remember… Rick: If she can stand it, I can! Play it! (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/284700.html) So there you have it. It’s almost like hearing that Bugs Bunny never said, “What’s up, Doc?” |
