The fake Marine thread got me curious. Just something to toss around. I only have eight.
As follows in order of precedence: USN BTW Reserve Meritorious Service National Defense GWOT Exp. GWOT Sev. Armed Forces Service Humanitarian Service(Katrina) Armed Forces Reserve Pistol Shot(Expert of course) Nothing really extraordinary or anyything like that.. Waiting for DoD to approve anothe Humanitarian award fpr the earthquake in Pakistan last year(adds a bronze star to the ribbon) and to get my rifle quals this spring. But I am also at the point where "Eight is Enough". Any more and it gets costly to have the medals mounted and ribbons replaced, etc. Not that I am opposed to them but I see senior guys with tons.. They bitch at every change of command that they just got a new one and need to have the whole bunch remounted to $xx.xx |

No disrespect meant but they give medals for hurricanes???????
|
|
I got a medal once for being on a team that took 3rd in little league and another for taking 1st in a physics/engineering competition at a local college against a bunch of other high school kids. Yea im a nerd..

They give medals to acknowledge an experience or service. UN Peace Keepers get a medal to acknowledge their experience. Good Conduct Medals are given for keeping your bootlaces tied. Humanitarian Service Medal are given to people who venture into disaster areas and provide relief to victims. As far as I'm concerned, the guys hanging from those helicopters, pulling people off of rooftops, among others who performed less glorious jobs, deserve some credit, since there isn't gonna be any big payday involved. They didn't even get a goobermint debit card. |

"What these fancy medals for?"
"Well, this one's for shorthand. And this one here, it's for typing. And this one's for surfing." "Hold it, man. You told me you served in Nam!" "I did. Saigon." "Well, how'd you lose your eye?" "Fuckin' 'round in the office. We were shootin' paper clips at each other, and one of the damn fools hit me in the eye!" .... In real life, I got nothin' but an Army Service Ribbon. The rest got revoked for some BS about "the last time you served honorably." |

Valkyrie,
How do you get away with out having any Sea Service ribbons? P-3's? |

I have the ribbon for the Medal of Honor. And the following other ribbons:
Air Force Cross Army Cross Navy Cross Defense Distinguished Service Medal Distinguished Service Medal Silver Star Defense Superior Service Medal Legion of Merit Distinguished Flying Cross Airman's Medal Bronze Star Purple Heart Defense Meritorious Service Medal Meritorious Service Medal Air Medal Aerial Achievement Medal Joint Service Commendation Medal Air Force Commendation Medal Joint Service Achievement Medal Air force Achievement Medal Presidential Unit Citation (AF) Joint Meritorious Service Award And many more. But you see... I collect military insignia, decorations, and ribbons. I don't claim the right to wear any of these and never would. In essence, my collection, if complete, would include every ribbon (and medal where practical) for every award issued by the Department of Defense, and going back, by the War Department. The Medal of Honor ribbon was obtained legally, from a friend of mine who also collects, who purchased more than one of them many years ago from the local military base's clothing sales store, back when there was no law restricting purchase of them to those holding the relevant orders only. I'd also like to add in all other ribbons/awards issued by other branches of the government, including the State Department, Department of the Interior, and any and all others. CJ |

None I earned and none American. But I do have a small collection of Soviet medals and decorations, including an Order of the Red Star. I hope to expand my collection some day, and perhaps I can find an Order of Lenin some time when I can afford it.

When did the corp start giving a national defense ribbon? I served '84-'88 and I thought only the other services awarded those. |
|
SS qualifed
national defense pistol expert rifle expert true story i was in boot during gulf war 1, they told me to wear the national defense ribbon, i refused because i do not feel i earned it ( being in boot not the fleet ). i got a few dings on inspections for it at A school. i even went to the point of trying to refusing the ribbon thru offical channels and was told i could decline the ribbon but my life might get harder for it. so in the end i wore it. i have mucho respect for those who earn a ribbon esp combat ribbons, but 2 years after gulf war 1 they where still giving it to recruits, and they did not earn it ( no active wars at the time ) therfore should not wear it. |

Wow! How did you earn a V on your Bronze Star and ARCOM? (If you don't mind me asking) If you prefer not to go into detail, I understand. If you just don't like tooting your horn, I'm forcing you, so its okay. I honestly don't know what medals I've earned. I better find out soon though, I have some fancey-shmancey reception coming up. |
