'72 Pinto station wagon, with large vice grips in place of door handles, small ones in place of window cranks.

Not having access to anything as sophisticated as "4WD", we had to satisfy our offroading & mudslinging urges with it, and a Datsun 710.

Don't remember a "single" car but bugged everyone and anyone to let me drive as a younger teen. Best memories are my grandmother's 60's something VW bug manual. And for real my dad's 1970 Charger R/T plum crazy purple 426 2X4brl 4 speed with a hurst pistol grip. Got to drive it about 1/4 mile, and took it real easy. Looking back I bet he was sweating bullets hoping I didn't act stupid. RIP DAD.

What was 4th gear broken? As far as I know they were all four speed. Until they came out with the 3-speed semi-automatic that didn't have a clutch pedal.
My father had a 1958 that had a 4-speed, a 66 that was a 4-speed, and then they made the mistake of buying a 73 Super Beetle with automatic stick shift.

Drove my dad's rental car around the block around a few times, but my 87.5 Subaru XT Turbo was the first car that I really learned how to drive around in.  Paid $750 for it...digital dash cluster, trip computer, pop up headlights, and a turbo which was fun when you got it going.

Learned how to drive stick in a ford focus.  Still have that car and park it behind my wife from time to time who still hasnt figured out how to move.  She's gotten it stuck in the middle of the street from time to time.

My Dad had a '69 or '70, maroon with white interior. He traded it in for a Gremlin X...a green one.
Looking back, all I can think is...WHYYYYYYYYYYY, why would you EVER do that?
The bought a VW bus in '71 or '72, as well.
WHYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Thread topic. Learned to drive an old red Ford farm truck. 3 on the tree. I'd already "driven" a giant combine on the street before that. Massive power....real slow.

I wouldn't call it 'learning' , but my friend/then-neighbor who is a couple years older than me let me drive his '98-ish Chevy S10 on a side street one time. I was probably 13 or 14 and hadn't yet learned proper pedal control, so it was a pretty jerky ride.

My first proper driving lesson came a little while later in my dad's leased Dodge Magnum (with 5.7 Hemi, of course ). We did the obligatory cemetery drive, complete with "You can't kill anyone out here" jokes.

When I got my learner's permit, the majority of my actual on-road learning was done in a 2001 Jeep Cherokee. That car is still around, I replaced the engine in it a while back (0331 cylinder head failure)

I became comfortable in my Mom's car, which was some kind of Buick (59 Invicta?). I learned the acceptable way to drive in Driver's training, which had Dodges or Plymouths (ca 1964) - our teacher was Larry Rozadilla, who later became a referee in boxing. I learned to drive a stick in my girl friend's super beetle (73, I think).

As a child, I was obsessed with cars.  I read everything that I could about them, including how to operate them. Could recognize every car at night from the shape of the tail lights at an early age. Knew what engines were offered, etc.

I idolized my older cousin Bill who was in the Navy. He bought a lightly used 1962 Corvette, with a 4-speed and the 350hp 327. Black with red interior. When he would visit, he would take me for drives in that car and we would always go really fast. I loved everything about it.

One weekend, Bill was visiting and my parents were gone somewhere. He looks at me and asks "want to learn how to drive?". I said "sure" so we jumped into the Corvette and headed off to a big industrial park with its own streets and blocks and stop signs, etc. It being a Sunday in the 1960s, the place was deserted. It was perfect.

We switched seats and he talked me through getting started, stopping, turning, shifting, braking, everything. He was very patient and knew how to tell me how to do things. I had already read how a standard transmission and clutch worked, so kind of knew, but in almost no time I was tooling around the industrial park like I had been driving for a long time. Didn't stall or do any of that jerky stuff you see sometimes. It was totally awesome. Probably the best time I had ever had my whole life.

I was seven years old.

The car looked like this one:
