For the general things like herding goats, being outside......and the complicated things where there are already other dogs and cats already with the Mistress?

Thanks!

Reading into this, what's the view point on a Texas Heeler? Further, give that this ranch will be in Texas, how do the suggestions associate with the Texas environment (ie, HOT)?

We got our blue heeler when we lived in Ft.  Worth.  She has lived in a hot weather environment ever since.  Give them plenty of water and they will do fine.

Blue heelers do just fine in the Texas heat.  They don't even seem to mind it.

One thing you should be aware of: they get VERY possessive of their owner and his/her truck if you take the dog for trips.  If someone you don't know bothers you when the dag's around, they may get nipped.

Great dogs in general, very friendly and smart.

Reminds me of one of my belly dancing teachers. She was a short woman with two large dogs and she had warn repair men never to take an angry tone with her or raise their hands......otherwise, the dogs might have something to say about it.

But how do these breeds do when there are two cats in the house, and a rat terrier?

I see the "get both" above for a Heeler & Border collie. Here's mine: Heeler & Australian shepherd. Good dag.

Obviously, you want to look at the herding breeds.  Do not discount the GSD; they can still do their original job.

I'd go with an Aussie like others have said, unless you need a larger dog to scare/kill predators. Then it gets more complicated.

Red/blue heeler.

If you want a dog to guard goats get a great pyreneese.

Haven't even bought the farm, errrrr, ranch yet!

No, this is just looking down the road as I get more serious about it.

Around here, my Vet runs a program for rattlesnake avoidance, ie teach dogs to stay away from such.

Most of these breeds seem smart so they should be able to take such training....right?

Well that has been mentioned to me as well, skunks, opossum, other little furry creatures of the forest that aren't nice to have around. How do they do with them?

They learn after the first time not to get to close to skunks and porcupines.

I don't know, we don't have many rattlesnakes here on the East Coast. I was talking more in terms of coyotes and such being a threat to your livestock, which would require a livestock guarding breed (and more than one of them, at that). Aussies are very smart and quick dogs, but they weren't bred to deter and fight predators.

We have a pair of blue heelers and an australian shepherd/border collie mix.  They live to herd.  When they aren't out working cattle with me, they practice keeping my twin boys out of trouble.

We shipped 1125 head last week, just over 1M pounds.  If I didn't have the dogs to help, I would have had to hire at least two extra hands to handle the work...maybe three.  They definitely earn their keep around here.

Google - Texas State Dog.

AKA - Blue Lacy or Lacy Game Dog.

The only dog suitable for a ranch in Texas.

ETA: to clarify this is a Tier 1 ranch dog. The breeders are very selective who they will sell a dog to.

I don't post too much but, wanted to step in on this one. Look at the lacey dog, I
am getting a blue lacey to help track blood trails, find sheds and some other things
to help at our ranch in the hill country. They were bred to work cattle but, are used
for hunting activities any more. They weredeveloped in Texas for Texans. Look into them.

Yup––highly biddable and easy to train, without the tendency to bite humans like a heeler.  God, I HATE heelers––nasty biting bastards.

The only thing about training Border Collies is that you have to be smarter than they are; otherwise they end up training you...
