Remington Core-Lokt 170gr is what's always in mine. It likes it too. Not afraid of switching either though. 30-30 is still reasonable when you find it in stock too.
Anyone go leverevolution and never look back? Have not tried it yet in mine. Attached File Bringing firearms discussion back to GD.. one post at a time! |

Mostly Winchester Super X soft points.
Every filling station and bait shop on the lake carries them. |
|
Best whitetail deer round for northeast pa. i remember when you could fill out the deer tag with the tip of a lead bullet. i think it has to be in pen today, and someone said something about the wardens being a dick about some small detail they changed on the tag. 30/30 is close to 7.62x39 ballistics. no gun photos, guns are bad.

Those Remy Corelok look fine to me .
Winchester is good to go also in my book . |
|
leverevolution is junk
I've had and seen nothing but troubles with them. Cup core separation almost always and or explode like a frangible on contact. |
|
Rem cor-lokt 170s give me the best and tightest grouping out of my 30-30.
Never tried the Leverlution stuff as the higher cost didn't seem fesible to go with, since Remington worked so well. Also, haven't a need to shoot a deer over 100yds in all the years I've hunted. |

Back in the day the Accelerator round was the shit for accuracybut it was a varmint round.
Now Core Lok or Winchester 170g as depicted is what mine eats. Many a dead deer and black bear have fallen victim. |

I used Winchester Power Point and Silvertip back in the day. Honestly, any of the low tech soft point ammo did pretty well. Remington Core Lokt worked just fine. I never had trouble with 150 or 170 grain bullets, and at woods ranges, 30-30 just worked on deer sized game. The only issues 30-30 ever really had was when people were trying to shoot at .270 or 30-06 ranges.

Power point 170s are the order of the day when the thuddy-thuddy comes out.

Shot my last deer with Leverevolution 160Gr. at 195yards. High shoulder sight. Dropped and never moved. That and 150gr Corelocks!

|
170gr Core-Lokt; Power Point if I can't find Core-Lokt.
It's a .30-30 - no need for any fancy-schmancy newfangled magic bullet. Core-Lokts have been doing fine for damn near a century, Power Points for about half that. |

Speer 170 grain Hot Core over 34 grains of Winchester 748. It puts dicks in the dirt.

I guess just the 4 or 5 boxes of whatever the fuck I have

Hornday flex tip reloads, loaded mid range.(sitting on a case of factory Federal and Remington 150&170s)
Don't use it anymore, 20 gauge slugs or a..243 now. |

Mostly Federal or Winchester 150gr because that is the most common. I don't know if I've ever seen 170gr on the shelf here, but I don't live in an area that allows most types of rifles.

Whatever flavor I can find in 170s...although, I am partial to Federal Partitions.
eta: I like to use 130gr PSP's in my Contenders. |

Federal Fusion seems to work best on deer in both 3030 & 7.62x39.

My reloads with Sierra 170 gr Pro Hunters and LEVERevolution.

Stupidly i bought a bunch of boxes of core lokt, then tried them in my 30-30. Looked like a shotgun pattern. I started reloading and found my gun loves 150 Sierra FP with 31.5gr h335.
I should probably pull all the boxes of Remington factory and save the brass/primers, but everyone i know gives me there 30-30 brass and they shoot the fancy flextip stuff. Attached File The ones circled are mine. 2000 JM 336 with a williams 5d peep sight. Buddy shot the other ones. |

I have killed a lot of deer and hogs with a top load of Varget under a Sierra170 gr Pro Hunter. Really great load.
|
|
I cast for my 45-70 and have a bunch of plated 30-30 bullets and jacketed fp bullets. I don't think i will ever shoot them all up. |
|
Core-Lokt or Winchester Super X.
I've been checking Wal-Mart every time I go for .30-30 ammo lately but alas... nada. |
|
Over the years I've used Federal,Remington and Winchester .30-30 loads and they all worked equally well on deer.
For the last decade or so it's been Speer Hot-Cor over Winchester 748 with the same results as the others. As a general rule the .30-30 just reliably kills deer year after year. |

Winchester Power Points…and I still have two boxes of Silver Tips that mine loves.
LeverEvolution was no good…at all in my pre-64 Winchester 1894. |
|
I'm dating myself, but the old school Winchester Silvertip loads were the cats ass on whitetails. ( in 30-30 and 30-06). you knew shit was about to get real when your dad and his hunting partners opened up a new box of Silvertips and started loading 742 magazines and Winchester and Marlin leverguns as they walked out the door of the cabin on opening day.
I either shot Winchester or Federal 30-30 loads. |

170gr Core-lokts
Flat nose 30 caliber/high sectional density at ~2200fps hits much much harder than most people suspect. Highly underrated and underestimated. It’s really hard to find a bad performing 30-30 offering..but I like the 170 corelokts because most years I at least make an attempt at a black bear hunt. The corelokts seem to have a little bit better reputation for staying together..and 170 grain for penetration. |
|
My Walmart had the Fusion 170gr for $3. So I had to buy ammo for a gun I have never shot.
Found out I have, not one, but, two 30-30s, so maybe I'll see if either of them likes the stuff. For 16cpr, they won't have to like it too much to make them worth that space in the ammo can for these few years. It is deer season, after all. |
