I'm "fat" because I turned 40 and my metabolism retired
But a bit of a belly and a few extra pounds isn't unusual for most people at some point during their lives. People who get hundreds of pounds over weight have to be mentally ill. The time and money involved in consuming that much isn't normal for anyone. |

But then it hit me: I reframed his position of CICO to this : “if you don’t eat it, you don’t have to burn it off.” I stopped eating Snickers, Paydays, and drinking cokes after my night shifts 3 or 4 times a week. Those 3 things together are like 1,200 calories. So there weeks I was ingesting an extra 4,800 calories. A pound of fat is supposedly 3,500 calories. I was 305 pounds in early December. I cut out the sweets and started doing the Atkins diet. I weighed 265 on Valentines Day. So 40 pounds lost in 10 weeks. I never worked out. My work would have me walking 7 plus miles a shift. I love the posts in GD where someone talked about quitting sodas and magically dropped 50 pounds. It deflates me because I also stopped sodas, have curtailed my beer drinking, a bag of chips that used to last me 2 days now lasts a week, bread turns green before I finish a loaf, and I’m walking everyday.
I haven’t lost anything. It’s incredibly disheartening and destroys my motivation. |

It's all of these: Food supply, food education, personal accountability, hormone levels.
The food supply in the US is completely messed up. It's addictive, causes high inflammation, and even impacts hormone levels. Many people like my parents trusted the "approved" food pyramid for decades which is a perfect recipe for obesity and inflammation. Much of the medical community is backwards on this too. Hormones control everything about your body. Cutting calories only works as long as your metabolism doesn't crash, and your metabolism is dictated by hormones. Some people can get thin just by cutting calories, some people have a metabolism and energy crash before they ever see significant body composition change. Staying fit and healthy today takes more willpower and effort than it did in our grandparents generation due to our food supply and changing hormone levels. It's also somehow more socially acceptable now to be obese then it was a few decades ago. I work my ass off to be healthy and stay in shape as a middle-aged dad. Some people have the dedication and willpower currently needed, but it seems more and more people just don't care. What to do? Cut out the sugars, seed oils, processed food, and calorie dense drinks (yes even beer). Avoid fast food and the center isles of the grocery. Eat plenty of clean proteins from grass fed chicken/beef/eggs/wild fish. Try Keto if you need to. Use an app to track your calories to make sure you aren't eating much more then you think. Start lifting weights, don't just grind it out on the stationary bike for hours. Walk more for great low-impact exercise that doesn't stress your central nervous system like intense workouts do. Get your hormone levels checked including your thyroid. Eat in a way that controls your blood sugar and insulin levels. Get enough sleep and minimize caffeine to keep your cortisol levels under control. Read the articles from Dr. Jade Teta regarding hormones, cortisol, and Hunger/Energy/Cravings (HEC). https://www.t-nation.com/lean-built-eating/the-two-faces-of-cortisol/ |

Fat people have a self control issues and lack proper motivation. You could debate all day long as to how they got that way or who hurt them.....but it does nothing to make them lose weight. I know, they know, they are fat lazy slobs.....but they just don't care enough to do much about it other than complain. Hard work is, well, hard work. Most people avoid that. And now we have the govt and corporations pushing this "fat is beautiful and healthy" shit. It will only get worse.

The other thing I did....and the reason I was at the doctor’s office in December is because I wanted a new CPAP machine. Turns out my old CPAP machine was no longer set right. As one sleep lab technician told me back in 2012, “if your sleep is jacked up, you won’t be able lose weight.” So I am sure sleeping better has helped with the weight loss too. |

Quoted: Thin people are more attractive than heavier people. They have more opportunities in life. Fat people are viewed as unattractive, lazy, and slothful. They have less opportunities in life. Is it something hard-wired in people that makes them view thin people as attractive? Is food addictive? It is hard not to eat a whole bag or chips or candy when you open it. It is far better to not buy the food and have it around. Are fat people fat due to no willpower, laziness, disease, or something else? How can fat people get thin? More importantly: How can fat people get and REMAIN thin? View Quote It's all mental. Fat people usually grow up with fat families and date fat people, and don't really have a "need" to be skinny. It's just normal for them. A lot of fit people have some sort of "need" that drives them to be fit. Remember, it's a lot easier to be fat than fit. |

I know the govt gets a lot of shit about the food pyramid, but not all govt info is bogus.
https://health.gov/sites/default/files/2019-09/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf TLDR, 150 minutes of moderate cardio per week, plus minimum of 2 days of weight training. So 30 min a day cardio x 5 days a week, plus 2 lifting days. That’s pretty ambitious for most. Deeper in the report, those who meet the above reduce their lifelong morbidity by 30% compared to those who don’t exercise. Imagine the health saving we as a society could achieve if we just exercised 30 min a day, for life. Being fit is more important than being thin based on the data. It had been my experience that once you put in the work in the gym, the weight will fall off. It’s physiological for me. Once you realize how much effort it takes to burn 500 calories and how easily it is to consume 500 cal....it just clicks. |

Building muscle means your resting burn rate goes up. Going keto means your resting burn rate goes up. Tossing out sugar and carbs means it's harder for your body to make fat. All these things combined with a caloric deficit will get the weight down, but you still have to do the groundwork. |

As someone who has lost 90lbs over the last few years and is struggling to drop into the "normal" BMI category from "overweight" I discovered I absolutely have a food addiction. Drugs never interested me, I'm baffled that people can be addicted to porn, I can go without booze and beer for months at a time but when my wife brings pizza into the house I understand what an alcoholic at an open bar feels like.

Quoted: Some take responsibility, some blame a disease. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Being fat is a result of poor decision making and poor impulse control. Sounds an awful like an addict. Some take responsibility, some blame a disease. Can’t we do both? I mean, low thyroid and insulin resistance don’t absolve you from staying thin, but they are factors. Giving up is a big reason why people stay fat. The weight doesn’t come off, they’re too self conscious to get help and think they’ll be made fun of at the gym or on a bike around the neighborhood. To me, medical factors that keep me fat are comforting. It makes it not my fault the weight comes off so slow. It makes it ok I suck at exercise and I’m not progressing. Having low expectations for myself keeps me from getting discouraged. I see myself as one of the little old ladies with a walker who meets her PT at the gym, just plugging away at it every day. Bottom line, for me, is that because of a million factors my results are pure shit. All I really control is my effort. Blaming “some disease” really helps me stay motivated because it allows me to focus on that continued effort as my success. |
