Just wait for the PSA 5.56 AK coming out later in 2020.

ETA: Or get a PSAK74 coming out after shot show.

I wonder if the PSA 5.56 AK will be designed to take standard .223/5.56 magazines right from the jump?

What’s unreliable? A 5.56 AK generally or AK’s that use AR mags?

The best 5.56mm of the AK style is the Swiss SAN 55x series.
Change my mind.

I love my SG 551-2 SWAT

There's no good reason to want a 5.56 AK. If you just have to have something that's not an AR in 5.56, get a CZ Bren or an AUG. AKs in that caliber are just not worth it. If they were comparable in price to an AR, sure, why not...but as a more expensive yet inferior option, hard pass.

I don’t need a good reason; I have a lifetime supply of guns purchased for good reasons, which will meet all my foreseeable needs.  This is about wants, although I might just get an AK74 for ease of acquiring magazines that work.

Me neither, and I'm an AK lover in great part because I enjoy shooting them in their natural calibers in which they provide a very enjoyable shooting experience.

All you get with a 5.56 AK is a needlessly expensive rifle that's more costly but inferior to an AR with that particular cartridge.

I mean, it shoots ammo your AR does, and magazines are a non issue.

My first SBR is a champion 2007 556 ak. Its been a project gun for a while now and I’ve had fun with it. I think the mag adapter was from texas ak, i cut the barrel from 11.5 to 10.5 and added the underfolder.

I'm not really a collector, but I would love to have a nice Arsenal folder.

A 106F and 6 mags would be just fine for me to get my AK fix, without having to buy a bunch of ammo in a different caliber.

I wish I would have bought one when they were $699, after the first Obama panic was over.

My SBR Arsenal 106u has been flawless before the barrel chop and after I got the stamp and shortened her. Both circle 10 and beryl mags have been 100%.

To the OP; I love my 106u but the mags are pricey. You can always acquire them over time; a mag here and there, and unless you plan on making it your Boogaloo gat three or four mags should do ya for most range trips.
There are also AR magwell adapters but I've never tried them.

The SLR-106FRs are nice.

Just make sure you get a good front sight adjustment tool.

Mag availability has been coming in waves but seems more steady now.

Aren't there magwell converters that allow you to run STANAG mags in 5.56 AKs? I could swear I've seen them around.

It had me considering one at one point.

The rifle has to have extensive mods to do this.
The trunion has to be milled out for clearance.
Best to buy one already done.

Big AK shooter.

Have owned two SLR-106’s. Both great shooters and very reliable over the thousands I put through them.

That said what I would do and just did is get into / back into 5.45.

It’s pure sex in terms of shooting joy and a pussycat on recoil. The commercial ammo is .20cpr and you can still find 7n6 cheap. Not 2011 cheap but cheap.

Snagged 4320 rounds this past weekend for .16 CPR

I’d wait if you are hell bent on a 5.56 rifle as there are many coming out soon / to be imported. It’s my understanding that several will take stanag mags.

But for a shooter - 5.45 all day long.
