Wolf, Tula, Monarch, etc all make a shit ton of 7.62x39 Hollow Point steel case but not in 308. They mostly only make FMJ. Why is this? I did see one listing for barnaul steel case HP 150gr of course out of stock. I just thought steel case 308 HP would be more popular.
I'm about to switch to my 12.5" 308 from my 300blk because 300blk fiocchi SSTs and barnes TAC-TX both died of china flu. I want cheap(ish) hog hunting ammo and will use FMJ if I have to but HPs would be better. |

Because steel case is shit?
Our that's the hive think on it. Thus no market |
|
Soft nose 308.
BTW, I’ve killed plenty of hogs with OTM and FMJ in 308 and 556. |
|
I think I read once that steel case x39 soft points are more consistent than hollow points. I don't have anything in either cartridge so I've never bought any ammo.
|
|
Banaul makes (or least made) a .308 soft point load that they sell under the Brown Bear brand.
|
|
I think its because there is a certain snobbery around using steel cased ammo for anything other than target ammo

Load your own if you can't find what you want at a price you are willing to pay. Have been doing this for more than a half century.

Go with soft point. The hollow points don't open and the fmj ice pick.
|
|
Monarch makes a brass cased 150grn soft point 308 round that shoots great and has no problem putting down hogs.
|
|
Reloading wouldn't really be a great option as the hog hunting takes place at night on foot and there is a lot of moving around chasing pigs. No time to look around in 3-4' tall weeds for brass. And no, a rattly-ass brass catcher is not a good idea.
I do kinda want to get into reloading for other reasons, but that's like a whole extra hobby almost, which I don't truly have time for currently. |

Hollow points in pistol ammo is for expansion because of the relatively low velocity of pistol ammo. The equivalent function in a rifle round is the soft-point. The hollow point in rifle rounds according to Hornady literature is to change the overall balance of the bullet toward the heel of the ballet.

Quoted: I truly did not know that. I'll stick with my FMJs for now unless I find some steel case soft points. Thanks! Years ago, my friend shot several javalinas in AZ with his AR15 and 55g FMJ. ETA BTW: FMJ is only good for hogs because they are so prevalent and are considered an invasive species, I believe FMJ 556NATO/223Rem is not legal for hunting like deer etc, every state's hunting regs differ, so be sure to check for your state. |

soft points are your answer. The HP Russian steel case stuff doesn't open as others have said.

View Quote You don’t have to pick up the brass just like you don’t pick up your steel cases. 308 has never been good at the cheap ammo game at least not in the last 20 years ish. Seems like 7.62x39 is what you’re looking for. |

Perfecta used to make a cheap 308 soft point you could get at Walmart for like 12 or so bucks a box.
Those days are over. |

I had a steel cased wolf round fail to ignite in my Fal and got seriously stuck in the chamber. Beating on the charging handle while keeping the rifle down range didn't work...doing the pogo maneuver with the rifle aimed at the ceiling of the outdoor range, while avoiding the muzzle, and hoping it didn't go off was a lot of fun.
Fuuuuuuuuck steel-cased .308. Never again. |

I use xm193 with excellent results in case you end up not finding what you’re looking for. Academy will probably have the monarch stuff if you look for a week or two on restock days.

Are you hunting to harvest the pigs or just get rid of them? If you’re treating it as pest control, FMJ’s will work fine. Some will die in the spot, others will go die somewhere else.
At Thanksgiving I killed 14 in a little over two hours using 55gr FMJ’s. |
