It could but I'm doubting it.

Seems like when there's an expectation of jumping is when it flounders.

I like the wild west and zero oversight just fine thanks. I don't need the governments help to make everything 'fair'.  Caveat Emptor.

It’s possible but don’t make some huge bet on it unless you are comfortable with losing that money. This whole thing is a guessing game.

Bitcoin is different though, it has a set limit to the amount that can ever exist, and that makes it a true store of value.  Dogecoin isn't like that as I understand.  Dogecoin is also pointless and too hard to buy or use, it's not even available on coinbase.
View Quote
Uhhh...I can easily buy dogecoin in minutes, drunk, from a phone, while having a conversation and a cigar with friends.  Not sure about other folks, but its as easy as shooting fish in a barrel as far as I'm concerned.

Easy to buy, easy to convert, easy to use.....no different than any other crypto. Just need to know how to move it around.

There are ways around that but if you are using Coinbase or Robinhood they will be sending your trading activity to the government.

Ive got some doge from 2014, if I convert it to USD through Gemini, can it be classified as long term capital gains?  Anyone know?  Are there Crypto CPAs?

It's been a fun ride but who is getting ready to short DOGE tomorrow?  The uncapped supply and massive number of new coins created daily provides a constant downward pressure on the value and one that will over take the hype.  That's not saying it will be a bust but there will be a pull back and once that starts it will be wild.

I have a feeling many potential buyers will have already bought in expecting the jump tomorrow and during SNL most of the movement may be downwards as those buyers try to get their payday. However if Elon convinces new people to be interested there could be an upswing in the middle to end of the week as those totally new people get accounts set up.

Gemini is located in the US but I'm not sure if they automatically send the info to the IRS.  Coinbase is now sending 1099-MISC for accounts that have over $600 in income from trading coins.

The proper way to report crypto trades to the IRS is by using IRS Form 8949.  It has a spot for the date/price acquired and sold.  There is a spot to record both short term and long term.

It looks like Gemini has a higher bar to reach before they send a 1099-K to the IRS for their users.  You need to have both over 200 trades in the year and total proceeds from sales over $20,000.  If you are under that amount, it is my understanding they will not automatically send a 1099-K to the IRS...but that doesn't remove any responsibility of reporting lesser gains.

I agree, it all depends on what Elon does or doesn't say.  I doubt he would say something to directly influence the public to get in on it but it is possible.  As you said everyone else that wants in is already in.

big dive, looks like many are satisfied enough to dump before snl. Premature?

it may bounce right back up but hitting.75 or so is probably a nice cashout for many

edit- hell that dive was sharp but bottom out only in the .68s

Or we could see it again in a week.  Or a 90% powerdive. Crypto be exciting, yo!

Yep.  Mostly out of dumb luck (I accidentally HODL'd a shit-ton of DOGE I bought back in 2015....and then was lucky-smart enough to be watching the graph when DOGE started to move in January, and bought even more).  I'll skim some profits at ~$1, but mostly am going to continue to HODL and see where the ride takes us.

Disclosure: I had a bunch of BTC in 2010...that I traded away the second BTC was worth anything in 2011.  Had I held onto it...I'd be stupidly rich right now.  Lesson learned.

I think we haven't seen anything yet.

Go ahead and jump out if you made a million but as more places accept it as currency it will only go up. IMO
