Glad she was found alive. I was really doubting a positive outcome after two weeks.

And, with little or no food intake, trauma isn't going to heal well, and other more minor injuries will worsen. |

She broke her leg or ankle is what I read.
I think some people underestimate Hawaii. Its basically a rain forest and a mountain combined. One of these environments can kill you let alone two of them combined. Mother Nature is a bitch. |

Any relation to the two lesbians and the dog who got “lost” at sea and “found” by the coast guard?
|
|
Lost? You mean hiding? It's only 3.3 square miles! And only 2.7 miles from a town... Sounds like the Yoga instructor was trolling for more IG followers with her story.
"Makawao Forest Reserve is a 2093-acre (3.27 square miles) reserve located in upcountry Maui in Maui County, Hawai?i, United States on the northwest slope of Haleakala. It is located 2.7 miles from the town of Makawao and 15 miles from Kahului Airport." Lost in the Plumas National Forest= Lost... Frank Church Wilderness= lost... Lost in a HI reserve? Hiding. |

All she had to do was what we were taught at an early age: If you get lost in the woods, follow any watercourse downstream. Sooner or later there will be some civilization. And yes, I know what Hawaiian brush can be like. https://live.staticflickr.com/3672/33630889586_7053b64939_h.jpgGulch by FredMan, on Flickr View Quote |

The helicopter that found her was operating with private funds. That's unusual and definitely not cheap.
Also looks like she may have ended up in a drainage that took her away from the foot search area. And searchers found axes and shovels and things like that along various trails - things that might be cause for alarm, or just abandoned trail maintenance stuff. |
|
She could have been following a creek down and fell(says between 2 waterfalls) and got cliffed out. Think above 1 waterfall and below another, not side by side waterfalls. Surrounded on both sides by impenetrable jungle, I can see that happening. I saw plenty of places on the windward side of Maui where you ain't going 5' without a machete or a D8 bull dozier.

I am glad she didn't have to chew off or hack away any extremities.
Glad she was found safe & is O.K. |

Her feet look like sunburn from the beach. Worst sunburn i had occurred at Mustang island in Texas, then got worse at Padre island. I had second degree burns and finally got to a doc in the box in San Antonio. Picked the right one, the doc had lots of burn experience.

Well, if she can cook, she'll be good for "two" things at least.

I was born into an outdoors, mountaineering family in the PNW.
We have a place on Maui and have spent a tremendous amount of time in the upcountry around Makawao. Although not the worst place on Earth, I would not want to go bushwacking down the mountain in that bush....especially with my ankles looking like that, no equipment, and running clothes. Many don't understand the bush, the slope, combined with the moist soil and rocks provides for a very difficult descent. |

Seems a lot of people in this thread have never heard of being 'ledge locked'...especially with a gunny-bag leg or ankle.

It appears that's what she did. And looks like she reached a point where she got stuck. The have an aerial photo of the spot where she was found, and it looks like a good spot to throw your hands up and tell yourself you're not going to go any further. View Quote |
