Tomahawk, Bowie knife, mace/club?

How about some ideas for a poll.

The displays at the Imperial War Museum in London show a stunning variety of weapons.

Anything new in melee weaponry thinking/development since 1917?

WW1? Fuck that. I'd say I know how to type, send my ass way back to the rear. That was a stupid war, fought by stupid generals, backed by stupid populations.

But a club of some sort. Simple, works wherever you hit them, doesn't need sharpening.

This is the first thing I thought of: E-tool sharpened to a chopping edge. I need a short handle if I'm going to be swinging it in trenches, so the short shovel appeals over a tomahawk or something like that. The weight of the shovel blade appeals over the lighter head of the 'hawk as well, for cutting through wool blouses and leather belts, even helmet straps.

I thought that too, but per the book Trench by Stephen Bull, units initially went with long arms and bayonets but transitioned to pistols, grenades and melee weapons on gaining experience. A couple men in each unit would still carry a rifle to engage longer range targets if encountered.

No way.  It's about useless compared to a good shovel.  I believe there were WWI shovels that were very similar to the Cold Steel version of the Russian infantry shovel.  Good enough for the SPETZNAZ to carry all the time.

This.

Something like an artillery sword.
Shorter than a cutlass, machete length.
Or a Smatchet.

If you ever needed an excuse to travel to London, the Imperial War Museum is reason alone.

I would join the cavalry and wait in Paris for the infantry to break through the trench lines, then win the war with superor mobility.

The US shovel with that big T handle got in the way too much, a real pain in the ass in the trenches.

This thing. Generally called the "Coupe-Coupe", it has existed in this form since before WWI, was issued to French Colonial infantry units (both Indochinese and Senegalese) during the war and developed an almost infamous reputation. Feared and hated by the Germans.

It's a huge freaking machete and it's sharper than hell.

This, only swap hands. There can be very confined spaces where a hawk isn't going to be good.

It would be a stone cold bitch to face someone with this combo, in a confined situation. Given more room, the rifle with bayonet or a sword would be good.

Screw the tommyhawk crap.

I'd rather stuff my pockets with multiple m1911s.

I'd also like several thicknesses of thick leather for a chest-back protector under my shirt. Sort of a double sided catchers chest protector.

Concur.  Become a REMF (canteen commando).

If I had to have a weapon, a short sharpened works well as a blunt instrument, a cutting instrument and for bludgeoning.
