Maybe deeper into Vinland than Leaf went, maybe the lake superior area.. or present day SE Michigan.. not sure how friendly the locals might be 700 years prior to the establishment of fort detroit but friendlies were found then..
Scandinavia / NW Europe Language would be easier to pick up in NW Europe/Scandinavia if you lived long enough.. even english would be a very different language back then. The europeans might kill , enslave, imptison you just as quick as anyone for being a spy, an enemy.. a witch, a heathen, a christian.. relative to who you ran into.. at least with the natives I might be so different and rare that i might be more interesting, curious and non threatening.. or they might eat my heart but that seemed more the iriqois east than the algonquins of Michigan area.. but who knows 700years prior to any written record.. could even be pretty uninhabited and definitely loaded with wolves... The other option is the Indian sub continent, language is a barrier but depending where there is a high probability of peaceful inhabitants |

I'm going to Baghdad. Hear me out. 1000AD is smack in the middle of the Golden Age of Islam, back when they were the most scientifically advanced culture on the planet. They wouldn't turn into backwards cousin-fuckers until the Mongol Invasion two centuries later. Cordova would have been a viable choice as well, but 1000AD was right at the end of it being a decent place to be. No, Baghdad is probably the one place in the world a mad engineer from the future could set up shop and not immediately be burned as a witch or a heretic. View Quote |

All the options would suck. Clothes on your back? Would we have clothes of our choice to match the environment, or would be dumped there as 20th century standout? I'd probably pick just outside a monastery in what's now England. Show up, act friendly, helpful, and stupid until I could pick up enough of the language to fit in. Plan on getting out ahead of the invasion but that might be an opportunity anyway w/ displaced people.

A year's wages? 1,000 A.D.? Anywhere I want? Just the clothes on my back?
I'd prep with some knowledge first, and make sure that I wore clothes with cool features. I'm assuming that I live out my time back then? I'd consider a few things: Crushing Duke William would be an idea, if I lived that long. Buying my way into an estate (nobility/title) would be ideal. Taking a lot of memorized socialistic laws from today, current 'definitions' of words like welfare/regulated, failed concepts like the War on Drugs, and find a way to leave some clues for the late 1700's early 1800's future first Americans. Just to help out all you fuckers. I would definitely find those old tinkerers/crazy dudes that lived in workshops out in the boonies. With a forge and some basic metallurgy techniques, whatever land I called home would have some pretty witchcrafty weapons of war to protect me and mine. Plus, I'd have cannons on ships. Yeah, 200-300 years before any ship had cannons, or even anybody had cannons. I could be the undisputed merchant transport security lord. You want guaranteed passage to anywhere? 25% of your cargo, or equivalent value. I would really only have 30-35 years left so 1,000 to 1,035 would be my time. I'd get busy right away making a family, hopefully some sons/daughters to cement my position in my home area. I'd alternate a classical education and modern education so they be light years ahead of their peers... just data dump future knowledge into them. With the riches from the merchant shipping trade, I could invite neighboring nobility to my place... see if there are any potential suitors for my progeny. Hopefully with some benevolent governance (due in large part to the revenue from the merchant shipping trade profits), and the protection of future tools/weapons/devices that I'd have dreamed up, I'd have a fairly loyal chunk of the world. I'd have to set aside a small area as "Communist" though, with instructions so anyone could join, people could get 'voted' out, and that people understood the 'voted' out people (in an actual communistic nation) are actually killed. Just as an example... "Oh, you want Communism? We've already got it going on as an experiment and it's been failing miserably for 200 years. Feel free to move there if you want, but remember that everyone 'voted' out would really just be killed. Have fun!" |

Every thing went back to where it was. Nothing accomplished, nothing done. Just two years wasted. No improvements. Keeping these young guys penned up and not able to cohabitate and impregnate locals after they were hosed off was totally unrealistic. THe book was no fun at all in you can't go back in time and make ANY changes. . I don't care what his reasoning, the SJW female was annoying and unneeded.
The ending ruined the book for me. I felt like I'd wasted the time I used reading it and time travel stories are normally one of my two favorite reads. For anyone looking for a good time travel book find "The Other Time by Mack Reynolds & Dean Ing". |
