Superior German engineering is a myth in the realm of automobiles. Fight me.

The first person the Germans killed was William of Ockham.

He made razors.

For all the horror stories I hear about the German V8s, the straight six and the M235i attached to it have been mostly great, with the only exceptions being a fractured charge pipe (why you'd make something that's subjected to pressure and heat cycled out of plastic that brittle is beyond me) that was an easy fix and a stripped transmission drain plug.  Apparently ZF thought it would be a great idea to spec their GS6-45BZ's not-tiny drain and fill plugs to be taken out with an 8mm hex key/bit.

Whose the german mfer that designed the layout of the TDI diesels in the beetles?
Doing an alternator on one right now.

Asshole engineering at its best.

I dealt with some German engineering firms.. they had a hard time releasing a product without getting it perfect first. vs get it on the market and make it better.

My favorite over-engineered German thing is the adjustable, folding G36 stock that blocks the ejection port when folded in the shortest two positions, so it nerfs itself so it can't fold unless it's in the extended positions.

The Dutch are.

I don’t think the Dutch like it when people think they’re from Denmark.

But Dutch is a Germanic language...

Though culturally I think the Dutch are much closer to Americans than they are to Germans.

Given the US was a British and Dutch nation in the early days that's not surprising.

a piece of German engineering that I've always been fascinated with is the Daimler-Benz inverted-vee V-12 engines of the DB 600 series installed in the Bf 109... it's kind of a wonder of packaging and compact design with all their firepower concentrated around the engine.

Daimler-Benz DB 600 series engines - one of those designs that turned out to be right from the very start... Inverted mounting provided better visibility, lower center of gravity, and improved maintenance access. In the Bf 109, a cannon was mounted between the engine banks and fired through a propeller hub. The DB-601A in the Bf 109E, used fuel injection instead of a carburetor, a great asset in combat since the engine did not cut out under negative g' forces.

round part near the cabin is the supercharger..

I submit the HK P7 as exhibit A in german complexity for a simple system.

It's been said that designing war machines for ease of repair (and a willingness to tackle it among common soldiers and sailors) gave the US a decided edge in WWII.

If a US truck broke down, some GI would grab a wrench and start working on it.

If a French or German truck broke down, it sat there until a "specialist" could be dispatched to it.

The MAS-36 rifle is the epitome of the “we don’t trust Soldat Pierre” way of thinking.

Want to adjust the rear sight? Take it to the armorer, only he has the rear sight inserts.

Want to clean under the handguards? Take it to the armorer, only he has the special tool to remove the screws.

Sheesh.

the Opel Blitz trucks were essentially US designs (GM). When USGIs found the Blitz trucks broken down on the side of the road they had parts in the supply chain to repair then acquisition them, getting them back on the road, only painting over the German emblems and id.

Do Austrians count as Germans? Glock is not very complex if so. Then you also have HKs which are over engineered and quite a bit more complex.

The Austrians choose to be German when it benefits them.

Anyone dealt with French engineering?  In one case it was if they laughed and said hold my wine cause we can make it more complex than the Germans.

My personal experience with both German firearms and working with German Engineers would be to characterize it as German precision rather than German efficiency.

Efficiency is just a manufacturing constraint after you have made the bestest and fastest.
