I think we coddle "slow" people a lot more now.  I know the schools do.  Back in the 80's we had a kid in my HS class who was a classic "slow" guy.  He really probably did belong in special ed but his parents were too stupid and lazy to do anything about it so he just kind of wound up with the rest of us.  He struggled mightily to keep up with us.  And we gave no quarter.  We drafted him into the band because we needed a cymbal player but he struggled with counting to four.  He wanted to quit but we simply would not allow it as failure was not an option.  I ran into him a few years ago and he owned his own commercial roofing contracting company and was doing really well.  If they would have pigeon holed him in special ed he would have wound up on welfare and been a gigantic pain in society's ass.

My son is technically "on the spectrum".  We chose to get him some early developmental therapy and then let nature take it's course.  The way he progresses is to kind of stall out for an extended period and then suddenly make a huge stride forward.  I guess we could coddle him and let him get all comfortable in his own little world.  Nope.  That's not the plan.  One of his biggest challenges of all things has been eating.  Textures and tastes will literally gag him to the point of vomiting.  In the last few weeks I've seen him choke down a lobster, a half rack of ribs, lamb chops, and a variety of other foods that a year ago would have resulted in a cleanup on aisle five.  Once he discovered that the way I cook things isn't the way it's done in restaurants, he's been off to the races.  Lord help us all if he keeps up at this pace for a while, he's suddenly eating like Godzilla munching on Japanese tourists.

There was talk of having to put him in a "special" school because of his lack of communication skills and subsequent shockingly low score on an IQ test at age 3.  The kid has never seen below an A, is learning a couple of languages, and is the undisputed academic leader of his high school class.  So much for listening to the experts.

Its the common sense part that is being lost.  Trust me, I see it everyday.

As far as the cause?   Its not 100% the cause, but it has to be partly to blame- access to the internet / immediate access to, ie smart phones.

Before, you had to retain knowledge. Have a math problem, do it by hand unless you kept a calculator around.  Now, just whip out the phone and Google your answer.

I admit, my own retention of certain things has slid.  Just for example, phone numbers.  Used to, you had prob 4-10 numbers you kept in your head, and prob a book to store the others.
