woke up this morning with a hangover and with my right hand throbbing with pain.

the finger was huge, painfull and there was obvious crepitus.

i have broken 4 fingers in the past, 2 were xrayed, i am pretty sure it is broken. should i tape it to the finger beside of it?

ETA: what do you call the finger between the middle finger and the pinky?

In this case it may not be the bars, but the knuckles you go to.

don't be an idiot and go get it xrayed and see what the xray says:

if the ends are not aligned properly, they will

1 take longer to heal

2 possibley not heal together, causing a non union, and may need surgery to attempt to correct

if you don't have insurance, price out an urgent care, and find an xray place that will take cash for a discount.

edit - and if it is a complete break, taping isn't sufficient, you should get a splint and cast to keep the hand and finger from moving.

Broke fingers (and toes) are a bitch. They hurt, limit you a ton, and in most cases not shit you can do about them. Tape it and ice it. If the swelling hasn't gone down by Monday, see a doc.

ETA: Just saw you don't have inc. at 3k I would just cut the damn thing off myself or wait till Zerocare kicks in.

what you do is tie a string tightly to your finger below your knuckle then tie the other end to the door knob.  now slam door. problem solved

At least go to an urgent care and get it xrayed for cheap... that won't cost thousands of dollars.

Then get an appointment with an ortho or hand surgeon as a follow-up.  That will cost you a hundred bucks or so.

The hands are what we call "high-dollar real estate."  For most people, their hands are their life... especially if you work with them.  At least go get some basic xrays.

Call around and ask places what the price is.  Tell them that you're uninsured, and would pay cash.

Go get yourself a popsicle and some duct tape. Not only will the yummy popsicle distract you from your finger pain, but the stick can be used as a splint in conjunction with the aforementioned duct tape.

That is an ER-type price.

i tried a search on oregan urgent care hand xray - this is one that showed up

don't know anything about the place, but, the prices are comparable in my opinion

SELF PAY Prices

Item     Self-Pay Pricing

Routine Office Visit (exam only)     $99 (examples)

Complex Office Visit (exam only)     $160 (examples)

Basic Procedure (includes Office Visit fee)     $195 (examples)

Complex Procedure (includes Office Visit fee)     $285 (examples)

Xrays

$75 (Outside Radiologist fee added to

Chest & Spine X-rays)

Wound Care/Fracture Splinting/DME

     Fracture Splinting     $85

http://www.eugeneurgentcare.com/prices/

and the comment about the alignment is a serious one. I have seen xrays where it looked like a non separated fracture, in alignment, that the patient had adamently denied a cast, as the person needed to be able to type, and had a metal splint applied.

A week later, the person was seen, with a separation now, because that person had used the hand, and caused it to separate - had to be pinned by an ortho.

How does your finger smell? hahahaha

I usually just tape it up and call it a day. Unless its a compound fracture, the docs are gonna xray it, tell you its broken, and tell you to tape it up.

I've broken my hand a few times and a finger once, employed at the times fueling planes once (lifting SPRs and 8' of 3 or 4" hose all day) the rest while a diesel mechanic, it is agony but not debilitating, before the bones fuse it really hurts when they move. If they're not near straight you can tell, if the joints don't work at all, I suppose something is wrong that never happened to me. If you wait a month to go to the doc they'll waste your money then tell you the only way they can fix it is to rebreak it, yeah no. I've only gone once, the first time, urgent care, it was weeks later when it was still swollen and hurting, they x-rayed and felt, etc, then said rebreak, I left about $600 poorer with a script for Motrin, it healed eventually.

What a whiney ass mangina.  Someone tried to help you and all you can do is bitch?  From what I see it would cost you $99 for the exam and $75 for the x-ray.  $174 and out the door.  Tell them to shove the $85 splint fee and take the other advice of duck tape and popsicle stick.  Even with $200 for gas you are under $400.  So, unless your getting paid $2600/day for work, it is a better option than what you are looking at local.  If you do make $2600/day and don't have insurance then this is your own fault.

So you have 2 options:

1. suck it up and deal with it.  If you choose to do this stop asking for advice and shitting on all the advice you are given.

2. take the drive and get it fixed.

What is not an option is sticking the hospital/tax payers/other patients with the bill because you are a dumbass and broke your finger after getting drunk.

No one here knows the real answer without actually examine you and taking X-rays that includes doctors on this board.

Your options include:

A. Stfu.
B: See a doctor.

Your choice.

The main complication of a phalanx (finger) fracture is rotation of the bones on
either side of the fracture, causing misalignment after healing. Not a problem
when your fingers are straight but when you make a fist, instead of all of your
fingers staying lined up,the rotation will cause the misaligned finger to go under
the fingers on either side, depending on which way it was rotated before it healed.

Hard to explain in words.
