I’ve had my SLR-106FR since 2007, and I had the forethought to buy a small pile of Bulgarian waffle mags back then too.

The mags are the real consideration… and I’d maybe go with the Beryl/Mini Beryl these days. The SAM5 AR-M5F is pretty cool too though.

I have a Beryl, Zastava M90 and the SAM 5. Of the three, I would pick the Beryl first, and the M90 would be a close second. Nothing wrong with my SAM 5, but it just like the other two more.

As far as mags go, I would pick up FB Radom Beryl mags, WBP mags and AC Unity mags. They all fit and function well in all three of my rifles. I also like the all steel M85 mags. I have some black Circle 10 mags, but they are extremely tight fitting in all of the rifles.

But that ain't an AK! I do like my 7.62 VZ58 quite a bit. Was a fun build. Trigger kinda sucks but nothing like the huge nasty sear the commercial guns use with both sear springs in place.

My favorite rifle cartridge is 5.45x39 though. Like it so much I make my own brass from 556 brass and swage down .224 bullets for it.

My 556 saiga has been great but ((10)) mags are spendy.

Today, if I were looking for a 556 AK I'd buy a PSA that uses AR mags. Solves the mag issue using cheap STANAG mags found everywhere.

True, but if I had to choose between an AK and the VZ I'd hump a pimped out Czech all day every day.

Galil ACE. I've owned/built most pattern of AKs and that would be my pick (still have one in .308). However, a good AR is still my go-to 5.56 rifle.

I do rather like my VZ58.

One of these days I'm going to get a "Not an AK" shirt with a VZ on it.

I totally forgot about the Galil too. Great rifles. Love the one I built.

Or OP could go to the moon and get a M76 Valmet. Mmm.

I built one from a Tantal and arsenal barrel then welded and remachined the front trunnion to take Galil mags like whoever the first asshole to make 5.56 AKs should have done.

For $1600 if you don't plan on shooting it much, I think the PSA option that takes AR mags makes the most sense. My experience with 556 AKs.. they like steel case ammo and mangle brass cased ammo which might matter if you like to reload.

I am quite fond of my PSA AK102 pistol SBR. I put some of Midwest's Alpha furniture on it.

As for mags, it uses AC Unity, Polish Radom (Beryl), and Circle 10s just fine. PSA is also developing their own. Mags for 5.56 AKs are no longer the issue they used to be in the past.

Early PSA anything are always a crap shoot.  After a year or so they usually have most things worked out. You can look at the videos on Garand Thumb to see how PSA responded to his issues w/ his 74. Blue jean Operator also did one recently on his early release 74 as well.

As for the 5.56 AKs, my 102 was one of the first that released to the wild. I had to send it back for a weak extractor spring and it's ran like a top since and has a thousand rounds through it. AK Operator Union has videos up regarding his 102. Evidently it's his truck/ranger gun around the farm and has several thousand rounds through it with no issues.

Their GF3 and GF5 are fantastic and even r/AK47 on Reddit will tell you they're GTG and they fucking hate PSA with a fiery passion.

If you do end up getting one and it shits the bed for some reason, PSA is really, really good about making it right. Hopefully you never have to use it the life-time warranty, though.

Id also add that the new production PSA 5.56 AK mags actually run well. Some early ones had messed up followers,  but the new ones have been good to go.

Unfortunately,  I cant say te same for thr PSA AK101 I bought. My smith had to open the gas port to get it to run anything other than very hot ammo. Now it runs steel garbage.

Well damn. Somehow I missed they had released. $25 isn't bad for a solid side. I might have to get a few to supplement my circle 10s.

Get some AC Unity 5.56 mags for your 106…  Work fine, and cost like $15 or less.  No more worries about cracking an expensive Bulgarian mag.

Yep the ACU mags are very good, and there are also cheap mags from WBP and PSA now. The mag issue is a non starter these days for any of the currently available 5.56 AKs on the market.

I'm liking my PSA AK101 with side folder so far. The fact that it runs great on cheap AC Unity mags is nice, since 5.56 AK mags don't have a universal pattern and not all of them will work in every 5.56 AK.

I was waiting for the KUSA 101 as well, but got impatient and jumped on the PSA offering.

I'll probably get a KUSA if they ever come out, if for no other reason than to complete the Century Series set, but it's far from a top priority now.

Yup. I have one double circle 10 that works in the PSA 101, but never use it as they're so damn expensive now. $15 AC Unity mags are the PMAG of the 5.56 AK world

Having owned some of the major guns mentioned in this thread, here are my thoughts.

FB Radom Beryl - they’re decent, but there’s a few catches. In my opinion they are somewhat niche and best for Polish Army wz96 cloning or just doing the bare minimum (optic) only. Accessories like Polish optic rails, handguards and stocks are periodically unavailable and hard to find. The mini is annoying because you need a gunsmith to swap the rear trunnion in order to SBR it. You may run into furniture/accessory compatibility issues if using aftermarket stuff on the full size or mini.

Overall if you want one now, now is a good time because they are being offered with bayonet lugs instead of the neutered configuration they previously came in. If you can stomach the wait for accessories.

Arsenal - unless you have to have a modern milled Bulgarian in the collection, they aren’t that great for the money. Maybe 10 years ago, but now they’ve jacked prices up, suffer from QC issues (ie overgassed SAM5s shooting themselves to parts failure), and their customer service isn’t there - they would rather threaten to sue online forums over quality complaints. If you must, buy used and save, or find a stamped or older milled gun for a reasonable price.

I'm really liking my Zastava M85. SBR'd it, installed a KNS adjustable piston and a Keymo muzzle adapter to fit suppressors. Zastava mags work extremely well and have LRBHO. I hear that AC Unity mags work equally well.

It's a heavy gun but built like a tank with 1.5mm bulged trunnion, CHF, chrome lined barrel, etc.  They may dry up soon so get yourself an M85 and a M92. You can always sell them later if you want.
