Cobra 1986 Supermarket Scene HD

Cobra is the greatest Xmas movie of all time. We celebrate by cutting pizza with a scissor in it's honor every year.

I don't hate Christmas Story, I just have no desire to see it again.  I just don't find it very rewatchable.  The first Home Alone is similar for me.  Never saw the others.

Even scarier at full size:

Formula is pretty straightforward - put a hunky yet non-threatening guy in green and a girl next door looking chick in red and then either have her hold something or put her hand on his chest.  And then throw a metric shit ton of Christmas in the background.

For laughs, my wife and I will watch one every now and then and it's almost always the same movie - successful career girl, on the partner track at her big city law firm / ad agency, visits a small town for business, before meeting the hunky veterinarian woodworker whose family owns the local hot cocoa shop.  She gets sucked into helping the town plan their big Christmas pageant and has the inevitable falling out with him over a misunderstanding, before coming back together.  She then decides to stay, over the objections of her big city employer, who needs her desperately, and their plan to demolish the local candy cane factory is thwarted.  And then she and the lumberjack ride off into the sunset on a sleigh.

And at some point during this porn for suburban women, you'll briefly meet the black mayor...so we know they aren't racist.

We particularly enjoy counting how many fully decorated Christmas trees are in each room.  The decorations in the town and inside every house are off-the-charts level of psychotically dense.

That's the point.  The producers don't want the female leads to be hot.  That would be too threatening to their target female audience.  They want them to be attractive girl next door types.

Then they setup a story that lets a modern woman have it both ways.  She doesn't need a man - she is hugely successful at her big city law firm, soon to be a partner.  But in the end, she decides to move to the whitest-of-white small town, without homeless or poor people, to take on a more traditional female role, marrying the town's lumberjack veterinarian and either opening a cupcake shop or managing his family's bed and breakfast, getting it back to profitability with her big city know how.

It is essentially porn for white women.

Christmas with the Kranks.

Tim Allen is in it. Jamie Lee Curtis is in it. Dan Ackroyd is in it. If you've never even heard of it now you know why.

Favorite Christmas movie, besides Die Hard, is Miracle on 34th Street.

I don't understand the disdain for A Christmas Story.  It's quotable, culturally relevant for just about anyone older than 40, and it represents a wonderful slice of Americana that is lost to history.  I'll grant that the story itself isn't all that amazing.  It functions more like a memoirs as told in autobiography, which makes sense because it was ripped from a book.  In that way, it works.  It's not some swashbuckling adventure that arcs and is resolved in 120 minutes like Die Hard.

Absolutely nailed it with both posts you made.  Funny too!

It's a tried and true formula, not all that much different from trashy paperbacks with Fabio on the cover.
