That's up for you to decide, but for me:

1. I shoot it better than any other handgun

2. It feels great in the hand

3. It's sexy, especially when paired with an X300

Luger as the start of the 9mm.

P1/38 cuz you have to.

BHP as the first real double stack 9mm.

P220 cuz it started the SIG classics.

P7 cuz it’s cool.

P5 and P6 cuz you have the P7.

Beretta 92 to represent the M9.

P226 cuz it’s awesome.

Cz75 cuz the fanboys will complain if you don’t. Okay, it was widely adopted in the world.

S&W 3rd gen cuz none of the above are US.

Full size, 9mm, metal frame?

Browning HiPower - check
Beretta 92FS/M9 - check
Sig Sauer Mk25/P226 - check
CZ-75 - check
Walther P-38/P1 - check
S&W 5900 series - not yet
DWM Luger - not yet

Qualify as "pistols"
MP-5
Uzi

I think these are more compact than full size:
Sig Sauer P225
Sig Sauer P228
Ruger P-95
Makarov

Unfortunately disqualified:
Glock 17
Any 1911 in 9mm
HK VP9/P30
Beretta Cougar
Walther P99

CZ-75 and it's variants.

I wish someone would make a 1911 scaled down to 9mm. NO NOT A SPRINGFIELD EMP. That only alters one dimension. I've got a Kimber Micro 9, which is pretty fucking awesome. I'd love something like that with a 4" barrel and a grip sufficient for a 7 or 8 round magazine, keeping all the other dimensions the same. A scaled-down 9mm 1911. Not a full 1911 with a fat barrel in it and magazines that require ribs to space properly in a .45ACP sized frame.

That Browning model they did in .380ACP is the size I'm talkin.

Beretta 92FS and Sig P226 get top marks. There's a reason they went head to head in the US military trials in the 80's. Of course the Hi-Power is awesome as well, classic. The new Wilson Combat EDC X9 is pretty damn sweet also, it's like a Hi-Power and a 1911 had a baby. The old S&W Gen 3 DA/SA metal pistols are pretty nice as well. CZ-75 has a nice grip and these newer ones seem pretty good. Sig P210 and HK P7 are very nice as well, but expensive.

I have tried a 226, M9, 1911, and a cz SP01.

The SP01 is hands down the best I have fired. The bore axis is the lowest hell it’s probably the heaviest but it’s smoooth.

There is one on GB now and it is very nice

I am a shooter not a collector so for me it is the P228-1 but for collecting well that has more to do with your opinion
Mine would be WG P220/226/228 but I am at the age if I did collect I would be selling them off now anyway

As for shooting I always say start with what fits your hand best. There will always be a couple that seem to have been made just for you
For me that is the standard boring plastic grips on a P228/229 (P229 is just a P228 frame with the mag well interior opened up a bit)
