Been meaning to chime in on this general conversation - first knife was one of those USMC utility pocket knifes (Camillus I think). The latest it could have been was 4th grade. It was from a friend of my dad's and they didn't really give me any instructions. Conversation probably went "can I give him this"; "sure, he already cut himself on the bandsaw, should have it down now". I took it to my room and opened all of the blades at once admiring it, and cut myself in the process of trying to close them. Instead of taking it away, they said "well, you shouldn't open all the blades at once". I suppose they knew all too well I wouldn't have paid any attention to that advice at the point 20 min. prior when they handed it to me. Fixed blade might have been the way to go though.

Also, my older brother was an asshole that never had my back and liked to mess with me. One time I was whittling something on the porch and he decided to get too close and got cut. Completely unintentional and really his fault, but I wasn't unhappy with the result. Lost privileges for a few days over that though.

I think it was OP talking about badminton a year or two back. We have batted the shuttle around for decades non-competitively, as in "why didn't you hit it to me better", for a couple decades, but it was always my wife that would grab some ultra crappy yard sport multi-pack (minus the yard darts) for $15 at Walmart. I asked her multiple times to let me handle it and stop bringing home junk that was so loose the shuttle would get stuck in the racquet strings.

Last year I got some decent racquet and these light up birdies. The light is worthless, because you only see it when it is going away from you, but it adds a couple grams over regulation which is great when you aren't an expert and helps with the wind too. Adds a little entertainment too. Way better than the bent up plastic ones though and they actually spiral in flight. Just having any reasonable tension on the strings also was a huge game changer. This year I'm finally done with the shit nets that take plastic poles and a dozen stakes to put up.

Still pulling asparagus regularly - batch accumulated from the last 4 days. The difference is hard to adequately describe when you grow it yourself. It is impossible to eat without the juice running down your chin sums it up best. That was also true for the lamb burgers.

I was whittling with a utility knife (no idea why), in the house sitting in the recliner (I probably deserved what I got). Fresh blade and I managed to slip and jam the whole blade into my thigh. I kinda gasped real quick and put some pressure on it. My mom was laying on the couch and heard me, without moving or even looking at me asks "are you bleeding badly?". I said "no" and she just kinda acknowledged it and went back to watching whatever she had on tv.

There's also the time that I cut my thumb nearly to the bone with a butterknife.

I cut myself with a knife that had as near as makes no difference become a butter knife years later. Worst kind of cut ever

I was using a file to sharpen the butter knife so it had this nasty serrated/burred edge that cut better than a Ginsu. My thumbnail stopped it from going completely to the bone. If I turn my thumb right, I can see a little crease where the scar is.

I don’t know basing it off the shape… the top four have a really cool shape figured the bottom were fancy kitchen steak knives…

Almost perfect. Need to swap the top left two, so both ends are arranged by size. Or maybe try reversing the bottom ones, too. Top row small to large, bottom row large to small.

That looks good!

I crashed out last night after working on grading and fencing all day yesterday, so had to run to the store to get breakfast supplies while everyone was still asleep this morning. Then didn't grab a pancake pic while scrambling around cooking everything. Just made regular pancakes, not sourdough, as I hadn't mixed the batter yet before my body giving up for the night. Not as good. Too cakey and sweet.

Going to have to finish the dirt work, mow, and try to work on the fence some today. Need to pick up some grass seed, too . Or, I could skip mowing for another few days and my back yard may produce some mature seed on its own - it's getting pretty damn close now lol.

Edit: best I can do right now.

The bottom three are Kepharts, named after the great outdoorsman Horace Kephart.

IIRC...

Horace was a minimalist and did not try to reinvent the wheel for his outdoor activities. For his general duty camp knife he picked a kitchen knife which suited his needs best, ~4.5" handle and blade, ~1" tall blade, ~1/8" thick.

The Kephart is a very popular knife for kitchen, camping, bushcraft, EDC etc because it is a very well rounded design.

I do not use my Keps in the kitchen for food prep, but I do use them on my ribeyes all the time.

My grandfather kept giving me little slipjoints no matter how many times I cut myself or got my knives taken away. I guess they figured until I lose something important I was just on the short side of the learning curve.

Although right after I gave my kid his Izula he cut himself after trying to resheath his knife after whittling something. I didn't know until I noticed he was keeping his hand in his pocket and trying to do everything one handed

I asked him about it and he said he was afraid to tell us because he didn't want to lose his knife. I got him squared away and patched up. Even now he always knows where his Izula and Sebenza are and that's about the only things he knows where they are. He can't find his phone or $50 bucks he made recently.
