That one really stands out for me as it flies in the face of other data and persona experience. S110V too. Bizarre. They state steels, but not the claimed HRC of each. But, far be it from me to not take the opportunity to selectively use the data to give a big shout out to Elmax! (I think BU requires the use of the exclamation point when you write Elmax!) Also of note, the performance of CTS-XHP. It's sad Carpenter doesn't want to give the knife industry any love. Maybe that is part of the reason Maxamet isn't more readily available. Generally I agree with his findings based on experience and reading I have done, but there is just no replacing real life use, which is hard to quantify. Is this the closest approximation? I think one could do better. Looks like maybe only Rex 121 beats Maxamet for edge retention. Also looks like Maxamet has better corrosion resistance than M4. Hmmmmm....all kinds of interesting stuff to look at. It is fun Spyderco uses all these steels. View Quote Sal and Eric are knife dorks too |

I really like the 111. Even though it is a big knife on paper, it just doesn't seem that bad in person. kinda like the 0452 or 0920, although those are admittedly still a bit shorter.
I wasn't really sure about the size of the 111 until a kind gentleman let me check one out. Gotta say, is pretty nise. I am curious now about the F3. It is an inch shorter, so I was thinking maybe it is like a slight;y shorter 111, but all the pics I see suggest the handle is all different. I like how relatively slender the 111 is, good ergos. Would I like the F3 size even more? Had I not handled the 111 first I probably would have ended up with a Hati or 95, but now that I have a 111, I like the inset tab lock and the size. That's why the F3 intrigues me, inch shorter and inset lock instead of frame lock. maybe I would think it is too small now though... Maybe someone really nice will buy an F3 and lend it to me to check out |

I love my Hati, carries really well, is smooth as fuck and has a great grind for slicing. I don't know if there's a thickness difference between the two due to the liner plus scales but it's a easy carry for the size. |

You are right though. I meant to take it off since I plan to use it, unlike the 110 which may do a lot of sitting. But ran out of time to nicely peel it off. Wiping Valentina down kinda smudged the sticker, so I really do just need to take it off. |

Are you able to share dimensions (in a unit of measurement that is not "hands"), how it was made, why he knows what he is doing? Where is the maker found? Other tidbits for the group? Does it have a name? Style? What is the handle made of? This knife was inspired by the Hayes/Boker "Magnum." He called it a Tanto, but I don't know that I would. He had planned to keep it because of a small flaw, a line of forge scale that is nearly impossible to detect. Since no one could really see this "flaw" he decided to put it up for sale, and allowed whomever to purchase it to name it. I'd been waiting for one of his pieces to become available for some time, so I snatched it up on the condition that our mutual friend and knifemaker Matthew Gregory could name it. Matt and Rick have been friends far longer than I've even been making knives so I thought he would name it something great like "Dick Pontoon" or "Sack Gnasher." He named it "Linus." The blade is 10" long, 1 3/4" tall and 1/4" thick with almost no taper to it. It is a chopper through and through. The handle is twine wrapped over wood with a turkshead hand stop, and it's a full tang underneath that. Given it's proportions and that it's 5160, it's truly a tool for abusive work. Chopping and batoning and digging at roots or splitting rocks. Yes, that will of course wear on the edge but things that would cause significant chips or cracks in a higher carbide steel will be minimized and easily sharpened out. Rick is someone I have the highest respect for when it comes to craftsmanship, even if he's Canadian, Nova Scotia at that. He's basically the Canadian version of Kentucky hill people. Tell him I said that. |

Well I ordered the Spyderco Mantra 1.
I am excited to get something different in the family. I have a few bucks to spend on a card and was gonna buy the Kershaw Nura 3.0 or 3.5. It is a Sinkevich design that can be had for less than $20 and I thought it would be good to throw in my bath kit when I travel. I am going to Grenada next month and wanted a carry blade but they have laws that prohibit knives. I really don’t want to be on the show “Locked up Abroad”. |

Frankly though, even though I would have normally have said the F3 is more my size, will I now think that is small because of my comfort with the 111? I mean, it's not a huge difference size wise, but with more blade, I can cut more (pics below). So is the F3 even worth trying? Plus the scale difference, the 111 is really nice. Different may not be better. If you are nice to me... And today Valentina earned her keep and made me look like a hero. Went to a social gathering (take note on how this is done Op) where we were served massive chops. However, it was a picnic style lunch and they only provided old dull table knives, which didn't cut the chops. The other people at my table all exclaimed, almost in unison, "whatever shall we do?" My wife smiled at me knowing it was my moment to shine. I pulled Valentina from my pocket and said, don't worry, you may borrow my knife. Valentina made short work of all the chops at the table, with everyone waiting their turn to use her on their 1.5-2" thick massive chops.
