Die hard Led Zeppelin fan here, but I'd have to say overall it's Boston's first album.

I would also say The Cars first album was pretty good too and The Pretenders first album, but those both foretell the 80's more than the 70's and aren't really classic rock.

So I say Boston. It's one of the best examples of 70's rock guitar playing and song writing all in one package which makes it hard to beat.

Eh.

Appetite was a monster but it was more of the same.

Kill em all was something new, and the start of an Empire. GnR faded away like all the cock rock Tranny bands of the era.

Funny, I was thinking about this as a thread idea the other night in the shower.

Of the two poll options, Van Halen.  Appetite has some legendary songs on it, but it doesn't have that start-to-finish whole album awesomeness.  And while Van Halen doesn't quite have a Welcome to the Jungle caliber song on it, it's non-stop fantastic rock.

The top debut albums I thought of in the shower, the ones that just absolutely fucking NAILED it and would have a "Classic Albums" episode one day if VH1 were still a thing are as follows:

Shinedown - Leave a Whisper
Disturbed - The Sickness
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Seether - Disclaimer (admittedly heard it in its Disclaimer II incarnation, never the original)
Stone Temple Pilots - Core

Rolling Stone called them " possibly the most despised band in rock&roll history.

If you want to hear a power pop masterpiece give this debut album a listen.

Get The Knack.  Every fucking song is filled with hooks.

Dirty little songs about dirty girls ;)

You have to have been alive in 1979 to understand the meteoric rise and fall of this band.

This gets my vote, as well. Very polished sound for a debut album (and I don't mean technically...I mean musically).

The problem with this thread is that for any worthwhile rock band, the first album or two will of course be the strongest.  The real prize should go to whichever band quits on the strongest album....For all the hatred they get here, the Beatles at least had the decency to break up while they were still relevant, and not keeping putting out trash for 20 years with 30 lineups.  See the Stones, Metallica or U2 for an example of how not to do it.

I understand the hate for U2 here (it's easy to look down upon people when you're 6'4" and 230lbs of solid muscle, date supermodels, and drive a 350Z when you're not riding around in your surplus half-track), but they don't quite fit the mould you've put them in. Sure, they have been on the wane for about ten years now, but they had a good 25 year run. Their debut album Boy in 1980 wasn't groundbreaking, but it was a fresh mix of punk, folk, and rock. Seven years and four successful albums later, they became "Rock's Hottest Ticket" when they released The Joshua Tree in 1987. Four years and two albums after that, they again hit the stratosphere with a completely re-invented sound on Achtung Baby in 1991.

Three albums and nine years after Achtung, they were back near the top and very relevant again with the throwback rock/pop/folk album All That You Can't Leave Behind in 2000. Their last decent offering was 2004's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, which was also a throwback rock album with elements of folk and pop.

Fact is, U2 had a number of peaks and valleys spread out over a very long stretch of time and were quite relevant for more than two decades. Not to mention, they had perhaps the greatest Super Bowl half-time show in history in January 2002, 22 years after their debut.

I figured Boston would be on the list and in the lead. Probably deservedly so too; I like them but don't love them. Something about their sound doesn't quite give them most favored status with me

It wasn't that they sucked, it's a different band and they really should have gone with Van Hagar like was proposed but the "brothers" were against it, to the point they were ready to change labels.

Popularity is not a good measure of quality.  Look at the popular bands that get chosen for Super Bowl halftime; they usually suck ass.

Black Sabbath was a phenomenal debut, but O.P.'s choices are certainly solid, as well.

No shit, I love U2, but they should have called it quits after Zooropa and Bono deciding the world gives a fuck about his political beliefs. The band's earlier music did a much better job on political commentary than The Fly's later interviews ever did. Shit, you can hear the audience going WTF in the middle of one of their performances on Rattle and Hum.
