I think Iran is currently at the top when it comes to drone shoot downs. After all all they manged to bring down an RQ-170 that was supposed to be stealthy.

Reapers, like other UAVs, are able to fly at an altitude of 50,000 ft (15 km) and can loiter over targets for about 24 hours, making them useful for surveillance missions. Crucially, all of this occurs with a flight crew that remains based in the United States, away from danger.

Again, what in the shit are they using to hit  that?

Exactly my question.  Unless the Reaper was screwing around at low altitude and the Houthis were on a mtn top.  Oops.

The Pantsir system slated to be given to Hez, that was an email subject around here a few days ago, won't get up that high.  That's medium-high altitude air defense.  Most of those systems are kind of hard to conceal.  Not least of which because most of them requiring targeting from some radar.

Can Buk (SA-17) be fired and guided solely through using an IRST or the like?

You take an old one that needs to be retired and send it down there to see what types of Manpads they use. You have a spy plane sitting 50+ miles away collecting intelligence on what and where it came from. Then you follow them home.

It would be far cheaper to install sidewinders or stingers on a drone and reuse it.

Well, first off - it is kind of what they were made for.  Cheaper than loosing a pilot and jet, plus a lot less internal backlash here.  Second - sure it was in international airspace.

They never said it was flying at 50k feet. At that altitude it's likely a lot less effective at recon than at 15k.

Then, does the Drone pilot get in trouble or just put another quarter in (hit reset) and it player up! Back in the game.

Lastly, 24 hours to stay on station for visuals, I hope that thing has cruise control.

I wonder if the Houthis were being baited into shooting down the drone so the USA could use that as an excuse to do something in response.  Everyone will likely have their own version of the "truth".

The USA will say it was in international air space, and the Houthis will likely say it was in their air space.  There will likely be lots more claims from both sides this incident.  Claims from either side will be suspect, but that is how the propaganda game is played.  The US says their drone was worth $30 Million, and I'm guessing that the Houthis spent plenty of money on the equipment to shoot it down.  Houthis not only have to buy the missile, they also have to buy the radar tracking station and the related equipment to launch the missile.

Maybe.. But Is a reaper incapable of tracking at its cruising altitude to detect cruise missile launces aimed at Isreal. I would assume that bit of technology has a hell of a optics suite strapped to its belly.  If its flying in man pad range i would assume its field of view would be limited vs at cruising altitude.

Which is above manpad.. So thats the question. What kind of thing are they using to identify, track and shoot down a target at 20K feet.

"The Stinger missile has an altitude range of approximately 11,000 feet (3 kilometers). It has a range of fire of 2.4 to 5 miles (4 to 8 kilometers). The Stinger missile is designed to engage low-altitude aircraft and helicopters, such as bombers, fighters, transports, or drones.

Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance
Here are some other altitudes for the Stinger missile:
FIM-92 Stinger: Altitude: 12,500ft (3.8 km)
FIM-92A: Maximum altitude: 3.5 km
Stinger FIM-92B: Minimum altitude: 30 m
The Stinger missile has a passive infrared seeker that emits no radiation that a target aircraft can detect. Instead, it guides on the infrared energy (heat) emitted by the target. "
