Does any one know of the propper technique/techniques? I was practicing in the mirror last night and it seems to me that the best and most efficient ways are as follows: FOR RIGHT HANDERS W/ AR15 1.) Left hand on forgrip, right hand on pistol grip or on the receiver extention (pistol grip facing towards your body at your right hip and muzzle facing up towards your left shoulder) Bringing the buttstock up from right to left in a striking manner. The contact point would be the top/back of the buttstock.------------>> 2.) Sort of a ramming action using the same hand position only this time I start over my left shoulder with the Buttstock facing forward and pushing/slamming the end of the rifle into the target.....no sweeping motion, just basically using your rifle as a battering ram.------------>> ![]() Any other techniques or ideas? |

You're supposed to grab the receiver extension (buffer tube on an M4) and strike with the toe of the butt, at least for the type of strike you are describing. Make sure you are holding the rifle at least 6 inches away from your body to help avoid hitting yourself. There is another strike in the manuals where you practically have the rifle up on your shoulder, muzzle backwards, and you shove the entire butt forwards with both hands. it's called the "smash", I believe, and is intended to be directed towards an opponent's head. Melee strikes with a rifle are considered lethal techniques, so don't even think about actually using them unless that level of force is authorized. If you wouldn't be justified in using a knife, ASP baton or baseball bat, you probably wouldn't be justified in using melee attacks with a rifle. Naturally, your laws may vary. I've heard that melee techniques with the M16 and M4 series of rifles tend to be less than effective in actual usage due to the plastic stock. it is possible, though unlikely, to break a stock using these techniques. Bayonet thrusts are probably a more effective technique. When doing a bayonet thrust, make sure the butt is NOT in line with your hip or any other body part, especially if you are moving while doing the thrust. You can slam the rifle into yourself and cause injury. My personal experience with these techniques is from Army JROTC, where we practiced this stuff with deactivated M1 Garands (parade rifles) against sandbags and cardboard boxes. Something fun to do during lunch. |
of your talking about where to grip for a but stroke.. i think your right .. your not supposed to hold the pistol grip.. unless your useing the butt as an extension of your elbow..... blunt object type blow.. small of the stock. |
We need a new goose smiley in your honor, maybe something like the Aflak critter. |
I was wondering this as well about the pistol grip. Probably better to use the receiver extention. |

heheh going through boot camp at MCRD Diego, I always wondered if a M16 would really handle a really good smashing butt-stroke and not break the stock off the thing. We used 1 piece rubber rifles to train with. ![]() Thats when I wished I had a good M1 to hit with.... I bet those would split someones head like a overripe melon. |
i actually bent the barrell on my a2 in basic. it wasn't extreame or noticiable without really looking hard but the accuracy was GONE the next day at the range and the armor told me i had warped the barrel and needed a new rifle for training. i did it on a thrust on a wooden target on the bayo range. |
DK can always try my new avatar. ![]() I only have a tele-stock AR, and it never really felt good to do buttstrokes with. The full stock might be a little better, but wood or other heavier stocks feel better for it. What I've tried is to stand with the target to my right side, and hold the rifle with one hand on the foregrip and the other on the small point of the stock, pistol grip facing away. For a slow but solid blow, I swing the rifle back to my left and pivot my body to the left, then swing rifle and body to the right to deliver a good solid blow to the target with the rear of the stock. I can also do a fast "jab" strike by jabbing outwards with the stock hand, striking the target with the bottom of the stock at the back end, keeping the left hand stationary. |

here's how it works, you take the end of the rifle you put against your shoulder (the butt, as it is known) and you slam it into OPFOR's face for visual damage, or to the midsection to watch them crumple in two, gasping for air. a proper butt-stroke will find the weapon moving in a horizontal motion, you want to strike your target with the bit of the butt that rests on your shoulder, not the side you rest your cheek on when dry firing at home while watching heat... If you find yourself with a non-functioning rifle after a successful butt-stroke it's probably because you used your rifle in the manner of a bat, and you have just busted that lovely plastic stock off your weapon.. making it worthless.
