At Cracker Barrel, I’ve had a main dish of chicken and dumplings with mashed potatoes and a side of chicken and dumplings. Not joking.
They told me it’s very common. |

Could be a side dish like soup I suppose ,never seen it as anything other than a main though

Quoted: Slippery or puffy is the real question. View Quote Chicken and dumplings is a childhood favorite of all us kids. Our mom made rolled dumplings, flat and thick like big noodles. Yum. If you're in a hurry try using Grandma's homestyle egg noodles in the frozen foods section at the grocery. They're thick and toothsome, goes great in chicken and dumplings. Add some milk and butter or half and half to make them extra rich. |

Main dish
We always did chicken with homemade egg noodles, no dumplings. One of my favorite comfort foods. |

Everytime she makes chicken dumplings, not only will she feel good about feeding her man, she gets even better feelings proving you wrong. Eitherway. You win. She doesn’t know it. So let her win this one. |

Main dish. I use to just crush all the dumplings when I was a kid.

Chicken & dumplins is a meal. It's only a side dish at Cracker Barrel.

Need to use fresh and brown it before stewing it for a richer broth. +1 point for using cast iron for the fried green tomatoes. |

No. Cracker Barrel chicken and dumplings suck compared to decent homemade. Not a knock on CB. They have some decent grub but really miss the mark on C&D. |

Main dish. But if u have as main dish, AND side dish that's OK. I've always figured it was a southern thing. But guess it's nation/world wide,??

My paternal grandmother made the worlds best. From scratch.
I divorced bitches that couldn’t come close. |

Quoted: I had the last of the last batch today for lunch. It's one of my favorite things my wife makes for me. Her dumplins are the best. I make the stock and chicken, she makes the dumplins and puts it all together. https://i.postimg.cc/MX24vMCp/CD6239-EF-B8-BD-4784-901-A-FF13-C62575-F9.jpg View Quote Gross. Chicken n dumplins isn't soup, bro. |

Main, and for my crazy family - sometimes its made for breakfast

It used to be a common and frequent dish before the ‘70s. I didn’t like it then, because the dumplings were usually not that good. My daughter (20) had it at someone’s house and said she wanted it. My first thought was: “that recipe died a deserved death. RIP.” Then I looked in the America’s Test Kitchen recipe book, and it’s there. The way they make the dumplings seems… unusual. But the whole thing is really good. Especially the dumplings. Never had them so good like that. The recipe is on YouTube.

For those who haven't tried them, Cracker Barrel makes good ones.
(Now I'm getting hungry for some, and I just had a bowl Saturday night.) |

Quoted: For those who haven't tried them, Cracker Barrel makes good ones. View Quote Agreed. Never really like C&D when I was growing up. My sister loved it so we had it often. Mom sucked at making the dumplings but now buys the frozen ones from the store. Later in life I started liking it. Tried it at Cracker Barrel and was pleasently surprised. They give you way too much food when you order it. |

When my mom made it, it was always the perfect consistency and texture. The broth was just a tad thick/creamy like a watered down gravy because she added flour to it. The ONLY things that belong in chicken n' dumlins are hand-deboned chicken, scratch-made dumplins, and a bit of salt and pepper. Goddamnit now I have a wicked craving. I've seen some awful variations of it where people leave the chicken bones in, have too much dark meat, or add vegetables... fucking heathens. |

If it's not good enough to have as a main dish you messed it up. I make about 8 quarts at a time and we eat on it for days.
